USA: Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+. What are the plans, prices and offers from all major carriers?

Verizon’s plan is to release the Samsung Galaxy S8 under at least two plans. With their 2-year installment plan, a (recent smartphone) trade-in, plus Unlimited Data, users will pay $15 a month for 2 years for a total of $360 USD. Users can do the same thing without the phone trade-in for $30 a month for 2 years for a total of $720.

Verizon also has the Galaxy S8 Plus with the same plan (with trade-in) for $20 a month for a total of $480 USD. Without trade-in, that same deal will be $35 USD a month for 2 years for a total of $840. Verizon will also be selling a VR package which includes the new Gear VR headset (with controller) and a pair of Harmon Kardon headphones and a 256GB micro-SD card for a total of $99 USD.

AT&T’s sale of the Galaxy S8 will include one plan that costs $25 a month for 30 months for a total of $750. The Galaxy S8 will also be available with AT&T’s Frequent Upgrade plan for $31.25 a month for a total of $750. The Galaxy S8 Plus will cost $28.34 a month for 30 months for a total of $850, or $35.42 for 24 months and a total of $850 with the Frequent Upgrade plan.

T-Mobile will be selling the Galaxy S8 for a final retail price of $750. They’re doing so with a $30 down payment and cost $30/month for 24 months on the T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan. They’ll also be selling the Galaxy S8 Plus for a final retail price of $850 on a plan with $130 down and $30/month for 24 months on a Mobile Equipment Installation Plan.

T-Mobile’s deal is offering the devices on pre-order starting tonight at 9:01 PM Pacific Time online. Pre-orders from T-Mobile will get a free Gear VR with new controller and “Oculus content (a $180 value)”. T-Mobile “@Work” customers will get a DeX adaptor for free at launch when they pre-order.

MetroPCS is also getting in on the action early with a Galaxy S8. They’ll have the Galaxy S8 available for one cost – all up front – for $729 USD. MetroPCS customers will also get the Gear VR with controller for free when pre-ordering the Galaxy S8.

US Cellular will have the Galaxy S8 available for free. Not free without a qualifying trade-in, and this is only for new customers, but free is in there, nonetheless. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will be available on US Cellular starting at $40 per line per month for data for four lines, or $60 per month for a single line with Autopay and Paperless billing. Customers purchasing a Galaxy S8 from US Cellular between March 30th and April 20th will get a Gear VR and controller for free.

Pre-orders for most of these carriers – including the ones that have not announced details yet, exactly – are starting tonight.

April 21st is the general consensus for when the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will be shipping to carriers and customers.

Apple.com: The 5C is now on sale via Apple's website. Choose one of five colors - white, pink, yellow, blue, or green - and select whether you want a 16GB or 32GB smartphone. With a two-year contract on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon, the 16GB is $99 and the 32GB is $199. An unlocked version via T-Mobile is $549 (16GB) or $649 (32GB). Apple is currently listing a Sept. 20 delivery date.

T-Mobile: T-Mobile recently switched to the "un-carrier" model, meaning it no longer offers two-year contracts like its top rivals. As a result, you now hand over a one-time down payment and then two years of monthly payments. With the iPhone 5C, the 16GB has no down payment and will run you $22 per month for 24 months, while the 32GB is $99 up front, also with $22 monthly payments.

Verizon: The 5C is up for pre-order on the carrier's website. Sprint: The carrier is offering the 5C with a two-year contract for $99 and $199, though from now until Oct. 10, Sprint is offering up to $100 off on any phone when you port your number to Sprint. So new customers could conceivably get the 16GB iPhone 5C for free. Sprint has a note on its website that says it will do its best to deliver the 5C by Sept. 20, but it might take up to two weeks. The yellow version of the 32GB iPhone 5C, meanwhile, will take up to three weeks.

Walmart: The store will sell the 16GB iPhone 5C, in all five colors, for $79 with a two-year contract, a $20 discount. Walmart will start accepting in-store pre-orders on Sept. 13 at the customer service desk. You can then pick it up on Sept. 20 or wait until Sept. 21 to trade in an old smartphone for a further discount through Walmart's new program. Pre-orders must be picked up by Sept. 25, Walmart said.

Best Buy: The big box retailer is accepting pre-orders in stores. It is also running itsregular iPhone trade-in deal between Sept. 13 and 16, though it applies to a new iPhone 5.

Power and Performance

Galaxy Note II marks the U.S. debut of Samsung’s Exynos™ 1.6 GHz quad-core processor optimized for LTE networks. It has 2GB of internal RAM; and comes with 16GB of onboard file storage and supports up to 64GB of additional memory with a microSD® card. Collectively, these deliver easy multitasking, lightning-fast screen transitions, powerful browser performance and minimal app load time.

The Galaxy Note II is the first Samsung smartphone to launch with Android™ 4.1, Jelly Bean, which brings stunning graphical capabilities and an upgraded Google Now service, including new features such as contextual search. The new S Pen can sense 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, four times more than the original S Pen.

When the new S Pen is removed from the Galaxy Note II, it automatically launches the S Pen menu, which opens a new home screen that allows one-touch access to most-used S Pen applications. Keeping track of the S Pen is simple now too because a visual and audible alarm appears if you forget to put the S Pen back inside the device.

The S Pen’s advanced features provide the ability to capture ideas, inspiration and information instantly, and to combine handwriting with any digital content directly on the screen, such as adding new calendar appointments by writing the event details directly on the day of the week, signing or adding handwritten notes to an email.

Selecting and cropping text, images or other content on the Galaxy Note II with the S Pen is very similar to a traditional "click-mouse" experience. When the S Pen’s side button is pressed down, the S Pen recognizes that you want to clip or edit the selected content on the screen. You can draw precise lines around the content to be cropped out, highlighted or copied into another application.

Key applications of the S Pen include:

Black Samsung Galaxy S III has been recently spotted in the UK.  This version of the device is now listed at T-Mobile USA, which indicates the Galaxy S III black will be released in North America as well, and not only in Europe.

Rumor has it that black Galaxy S III will be launched by the end of this month,  and there's a chance that this one will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, , it comes in line with previous unconfirmed reports that Samsung successfully completed firmware tests for this update.

Verizon will begin shipping its CDMA, LTE-ready version of the Samsung Galaxy S3  on July 10.

The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich stunner will sell in blue and white shades, and in 16GB and 32GB storage capacities -- for $199.99 and $249.99, respectively. You'll be able to buy the 32GB version online on July 10, but it won't show up in stores for a few weeks.

The Galaxy S3 features a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED screen, Qualcomm's fastest processor to date, a great 8-megapixel camera, and a heap of software enhancements.

Verizon's launch makes it the third U.S. carrier to get the Galaxy S3 in the U.S., after T-Mobile and AT&T, whose version goes on sale in stores on July 6. 

Sprint's version was delayed, and U.S. Cellular and regional carrier C-Spire are slated to get the phone in the coming weeks.

 It's official, Samsung's next superphone is destined for T-Mobile and AT&T. At least, that's what industry interest group the Bluetooth SIG seems to think. Apparently the body has approved T-Mobile and AT&T flavors of the mighty Galaxy S III.

Phone blogs Gotta Be Mobile and Unwired View both report that the Samsung SGH-I747M and SGH-T999 model handsets received the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) green light. These devices, the SGH-I747M (expected to hit AT&T) and SGH-T999 (slated for T-Mobile), appear to be variants of the Galaxy S III and will feature the latest version of Bluetooth, version 4.0.

All Galaxy S III versions will have the same basic specs. There may be a chance that the Galaxy S III handset will run slightly different clock-speed processors.

T-Mobile with New 42Mbps 4G supported, announces Samsung Galaxy S2 and HTC Amaze 4G

At Mobilize 2011, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network, Cole Brodman, CMO and EVP at T-Mobile USA, announced the availability of two new premium Android handsets for T-Mobile, the ubiquitous Samsung Galaxy S2, and the HTC Amaze 4G.

As you may have noticed, there are different versions of the Galaxy S2 for almost every carrier; T-Mobile is no different.

T-Mobile’s version has a 4.52″ Super AMOLED screen (largest smartphone screen of T-Mobile’s offerings), and a 1.5 GHz, dual-core processor. T-Mobile is touting Netflix, however,  the Netflix app should be supported now for any Android phone running 2.3.

The HTC Amaze 4G is touted for its great 8MP still camera and HD 1080p video recording. Cole Brodman also talked up the new SmartShot feature that rapidly takes 5 photos in succession then automagically combines the photos so that everyone in the shot looks good, avoiding the problem where one or two people blinked, or weren’t quite smiling when the shot was taken.

Of course both devices will support T-Mobile’s brand of HSPA+. When asked by Om Malik whether T-Mobile would be moving to LTE for 4G, Brodman said that they plan to in the future, but in the near term, for at least the next couple years, T-Mobile will remain on the HSPA+ bandwagon.

Deutsche Telekom said that its Polish arm, Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa, is to introduce the T-Mobile brand from 5 June 2011, in a “gradual process“ which will take place over several months.

The move follows Deutsche Telekom gaining sole ownership of the business, which previously used the Era brand.

Sprint Nextel urged regulators to block AT&T Inc's $39 billion bid to buy Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA.

Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. mobile carrier, said in a statement on Monday that the transaction would harm consumers and competition.

"Sprint will fight this attempt by AT&T to undo the progress of the past 25 years and create a new Ma Bell duopoly," said Vonya McCann, Sprint's senior vice president of government affairs.

Sprint already faces tough competition from its two bigger rivals, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc. The combination of AT&T and T-Mobile USA, the No. 4 U.S. operator, would leapfrog Verizon Wireless as market leader.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department are expected to take at least a year to review the proposed merger.

CTIA 2011: Nokia ‘Astounds’ US with new Symbian device. Launch April 6. $79.99. T-mobile.

Nokia last night confirmed reports it is to launch a new Symbian device in the US via an exclusive deal with T-Mobile, a move designed to strengthen its limited presence in the North American market and build on its recent promise to ship 150 million more Symbian devices.

 Dubbed the Nokia Astound, the new device appears to be a tweaked C7, featuring the same 3.5-inch AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera, and 720p HD video capture as the original announced last year.

The only obvious differences are the T-Mobile branding along the bottom chin and support for the updated Symbian^3.1, which has features including portrait QWERTY input and a refreshed browser.

 T-Mobile will be offering Wi-Fi calling as well as unrestricted video calling over Qik thanks to the front-facing camera. Nokia has called it “an affordable smartphone,” promising availability beginning 6 April for US$79.99 after a US$50 mail-in rebate on contract.

Nokia’s move comes as it recently promised to commit to “the long-tail of Symbian as long as it gives us profitable margin.” The world’s largest handset vendor has already pledged to move to Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS as its “primary smartphone platform,” but that strategy will take until 2013 to come to full fruition and in the meantime Nokia has said it intends to sell 150 million more Symbian phones during the transition phase.

 Nokia has an installed user base of around 200 million Symbian phones worldwide. The company plans to update Symbian's user interface this year. Meanwhile the launch of the Astound will aim to boost its credentials in the US market.

AT&T to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, would make it largest US cellphone company, would make it largest US cellphone company.

AT&T Inc. said Sunday it will buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom AG in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $39 billion that would make it the largest cellphone company in the U.S.

The deal would reduce the number of wireless carriers with national coverage from four to three, and is sure to face close regulatory scrutiny. It also removes a potential partner for Sprint Nextel Corp., the struggling No. 3 carrier, which had been in talks to combine with T-Mobile USA, according to Wall Street Journal reports.

AT&T is now the country's second-largest wireless carrier and T-Mobile USA is the fourth largest. The acquisition would give AT&T 129 million subscribers, vaulting it past Verizon Wireless to make it the largest U.S. cellphone company. The combined company would serve about 43 percent of U.S. cellphones.

For T-Mobile USA's 33.7 million subscribers, the news doesn't immediately change anything. Because of the long regulatory process, AT&T expects the acquisition to take a year to close. But when and if it closes, T-Mobile USA customers would get access to AT&T's phone line-up, including the iPhone.

The effect of reduced competition in the cellphone industry is harder to fathom. Public interest group Public Knowledge said that eliminating one of the four national phone carriers would be "unthinkable."

"We know the results of arrangements like this - higher prices, fewer choices, less innovation," said Public Knowledge president Gigi Sohn, in a statement.

T-Mobile has relatively cheap service plans compared with AT&T, particularly when comparing the kind that don't come with a two-year contract. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said one of the goals of the acquisition would be to move T-Mobile customers to smart phones, which have higher monthly fees. AT&T "will look hard" at keeping T-Mobile's no-contract plans, he said.

AT&T's general counsel, Wayne Watts, said cellphones are "an incredibly competitive market," with five or more carriers in most major cities. He pointed out that prices have declined in the last decade, even as the industry has consolidated. In the most recent mega-deal, Verizon Wireless bought No. 5 carrier Alltel for $5.9 billion in 2009.

AT&T would pay about $25 billion in cash to Deutsche Telekom, Germany's largest phone company, and stock that is equivalent to an 8 percent stake in AT&T. Deutsche Telekom would get one seat on AT&T's board.

Like Sprint, T-Mobile has been struggling to compete with much larger rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless, and its revenue has been largely flat for three years. Bellevue, Wash.-based T-Mobile USA's subscriber count has stalled at just under 34 million, though it posts consistent profits.

Deutsche Telekom has been looking at radical moves to let it get more value out of its U.S. holding, including a possible combination with a U.S. partner.

There was a big hurdle to a T-Mobile USA-Sprint deal: The two companies use incompatible network technologies. The same hurdle would apply in a Verizon Wireless-T-Mobile USA deal. But the networks of AT&T and T-Mobile use the same underlying technology, so to some large extent, AT&T phones can use T-Mobile's network and vice versa.

AT&T said its customers would benefit from the cell towers and wireless spectrum the deal would bring. In some areas, it would add 30 percent more capacity, AT&T said.

"It obviously will have a significant impact in terms of dropped calls and network performance," Stephenson said.

To assuage regulatory concerns, AT&T said in a statement Sunday that it would spend an additional $8 billion to expand ultrafast wireless broadband into rural areas. Instead of covering about 80 percent of the U.S. population with its so-called Long Term Evolution, or LTE network, AT&T's new goal would be 95 percent, it said. 

That means blanketing an additional area 4.5 times the size of Texas. The network is scheduled to go live in a few areas this summer, but construction will take years.

The deal has been approved by the boards of both companies. Dallas-based AT&T can increase its cash portion by up to $4.2 billion, with a reduction in the stock component, as long as Deutsche Telekom receives at least a 5 percent equity ownership interest in the buyer.

The deal is final and doesn't leave room for other buyers jumping in with a higher bid, AT&T said.

AT&T would finance the cash part of the deal with new debt and cash on its balance sheet and will assume no debt from T-Mobile.
