Africa: HP expands Durban office

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Tech giant HP, has increased its presence in Durban through acquisitions and staff hiring.
Manoj Bhoola, HP country manager of enterprise, storage, servers and networking ESSN, says HP has relocated to new offices in KwaZulu Natal and has made several staff appointments.
Bhoola explains that this follows HP's strategy to increase its IT services presence into the Durban region, after targeting KwaZulu Natal as a potential growth market.
“The Natal market is starting to pick up again,” says Bhoola. “It went through a period where the market was drying up, refresh cycles were getting longer compared to Joburg counterparts, and companies were sweating their assets.”
Bhoola says: “We currently have 24 staff members in our Natal office, which is mainly focused around providing service delivery and consulting services.” He adds that HP will be making more staff appointments in its KwaZulu Natal office this year.
“Now we find that organisations in the area, which are mostly manufacturers and retail stores, have started to become big IT spenders again. It's probably because the economy is starting to turn in that space. Trevor Manuel said that you can measure an economy by the way manufacturing companies start spending.”

Hewlett-Packard rounds out its cloud software and consulting with a new cloud service

While I can assume HP is planning cloud services around webOS (an OS built for web and cloud services), I can't be sure what those services might entail. That said, I'm willing to speculate that they'll be pretty broad. In addition to the typical contact, calendar, notes syncing, I wouldn't be surprised to see HP add a Dropbox-like storage locker, web-based access, and cloud/Internet-based printing (after all, that was one reason HP gave for buying Palm in the first place). The company could go even further by offering its own online office solution and providing a rich data/document sharing mechanism.

Another service already leaked   for the Topaz webOS tablet is the HP cloud-canvas service that could bring art ,graphic and  fashion designers to webOS.

HP cloud-canvas

In short, I could see the company planning something akin to a webOS-specific version of the majority of Google's cloud offerings but, perhaps, with deeper device integration and deeper integration between services.

Asia: HP touts SaaS app store to Asia's ISVs

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

SINGAPORE--Hewlett-Packard is targeting to pull both independent software vendors (ISVs) and enterprise customers into its orbit by providing a "connected cloud" through an app store platform that touts software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings.

Kelly Tan, vice president and managing director at HP Singapore, said the app store--called AP4SaaS (aggregation platform for SaaS)--has been operating globally since June 2010 but is only being actively marketed in the Asia-Pacific region now.

The gap was to allow HP to ensure the platform was working properly, and that both ISVs and enterprise customers would be onboard with the vendor's "connected cloud" vision, Tan said during a media briefing here Friday.

The AP4SaaS platform sits as a layer atop the vendor's standard infrastructure platforms based on its ProLiant Blade systems and Intel Xeon processors.

Tan said plans for AP4SaaS originated from the work the company had done with telco partners a couple of years back. "We had the technology on-hand to create this app distribution platform and it was just a matter of putting things together," she said.

In particular, the executive pointed to three industry verticals--government, finance and digital media--the company focused on as a "starting point" to get the platform going in the Asia-Pacific. But, it is now already looking to push the app store to other verticals, she said.

Tan explained that by pulling in its existing customer base to adopt the platform, this will in turn appeal to their partner ISVs and help populate the apps marketplace.

HP recently unveiled a slew of cloud-based offerings targeted at enterprises. Its Enterprise Cloud Services Compute, for instance, is touted to allow companies to automate the deployment process of private, or on-premise cloud systems, according to an earlier report..

Another product, HP CloudSystem, combines datacenter technologies with the vendor's cloud service automation software to deliver unified security, governance and compliance across applications and various cloud environments, noted Damien Wong, general manager of software for HP Southeast Asia, who was also at the media briefing.

According to Tan, these cloud products continue to illustrate the company's wider  “Instant-On Enterprise” strategy.

Sales of multi-core smartphones will account for 15% of global handset shipments in 2011 with the ratio likely to climb to 45% in 2015, according to an estimate by Strategy Analytics.

F1 Race Cars : Ferrari unveils 2011 F150

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Formula One car with hydraulically controlled rear wing and KERS

The project, which goes by the internal code name of 662, represents the Scuderia’s interpretation of the technical and sporting regulations that apply this year. Various factors influenced the design of the car, especially on the aerodynamic front, to the extent that the F150 can be seen as severing ties with the recent past.

The innovative aspects are in part dictated by changes to the regulations and partly down to original thinking from our designers. As far as the rule changes from 2010 are concerned, the double diffuser and the blown rear wing are banned, as is the use of apertures in the front part of the floor, while the use of an hydraulically controlled adjustable rear wing has been introduced.

After an unofficial agreement between the teams saw its use banned for 2010, KERS is back this year, thanks partly to the increase in the car’s minimum weight and stricter controls on weight distribution figures. The Scuderia has decided to incorporate this technology on the F150 and this has had a significant impact on the design, also taking into account that the dimensions of the fuel cell are very different to those of 2009. Also significant are changes dictated by the introduction of stricter safety requirements in terms of crash-tests, cockpit area protection and wheel-retaining cables for use in accidents.

At first glance, the front part of the F150 monocoque appears to be higher than that of the F10. The openings for the side air intakes are reduced in size, while the layout of the dynamic one above the driver’s head has been modified. The rear suspension features a new design, while that at the front has been modified, following changes to the front part of the chassis. The exhaust system layout is similar to that adopted for the second half of last season and the cooling system has had to take into account the return of KERS and the new air exit ducts. The braking system has been completely redesigned in collaboration with Brembo.

However, the aerodynamic package sported by the car at the presentation is very different to the one which will be seen for the first race in Bahrain: for the early stages of testing, the decision was taken to concentrate on development aspects linked to the mechanical components and on developing an understanding of the Pirelli tyres, while continuing to push on the development of aerodynamic performance in the wind tunnel.

Indeed, the tyres will be another significant new element this season: after a thirteen year relationship with Bridgestone, this year it is Pirelli who take up the baton as sole supplier to Formula 1 for the next three years and thus provide the tyres for the cars from Maranello. Given that the teams have so far only managed two days of testing with the new tyres back in November, clearly the fifteen days of testing prior to the start of the season will be very important when it comes to adapting the handling of the car to the tyres.

As the freeze on engine performance development is still ongoing, there have been no actual modifications to the 056 engine, but that does not mean Ferrari’s engine specialists have been idle. Work has gone into improving reliability, working especially on the pneumatic front, as well as on reducing costs. Furthermore, the reintroduction of KERS has led to a substantial change in the architecture of the front end of the engine, with modifications to the drive shaft system of the KERS itself and the crankshaft and this has led to changes to the cooling and lubrication systems.

The kinetic energy recovery system, designed by Ferrari, has been produced in conjunction with MTS and Magneti Marelli and was fine tuned based on experience acquired in 2009, with the aim of reducing its size and weight, while maintaining, in accordance with the regulations, the maximum useable power and its useage cycle over one lap. This is another area where great attention has been paid to cost reduction, both in terms of its development and the way it is run, so as to make the system equally viable for our customer teams, Sauber and Toro Rosso. The positioning of the KERS within the fuel cell was a further impetus to look at solutions aimed at reducing fuel consumption: in this area, the contribution from a key partner in the form of Shell was vital and will continue to be so throughout the season.

The number of testing days available to the teams remains the same, with 15 prior to the start of the season, therefore preparatory work on the test beds, prior to taking to the track has been ever more important, both on the chassis side and for areas such as the gearbox, engine and KERS.

As is always the case at Ferrari, great attention has been paid to the performance and optimisation of all materials used, in the design stages and when going through quality control, striving to maximise performance levels and reliability, while delivering the highest possible safety standards.

Science: Germany: Carbon nanotubes to make touch screens go at low-cost

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Capacitive touchscreens, the type most commonly used in consumer electronics, usually use a conductor made of indium tin oxide (ITO). This material is well suited to this purpose due to its excellent conductivity and its transparency in thin layers. Unfortunately there are few deposits of indium in the world, which has prompted a search for alternatives. One such new alternative are touchscreens containing carbon nanotubes, which researchers claim offer comparable performance to ITO, but are much cheaper.

The main components of the new electrode material developed by researchers at Fraunhofer are carbon nanotubes and low-cost polymers. The electrode foil is composed of two layers. One is a foil made of inexpensive polyethylenterephthalate (PET) like that used to make plastic bottles. The second is thin film that is formed when a mixture of carbon nanotubes and electrically conducting polymers that is applied to the PET as a solution dries.

These combinations of plastics have not been particularly durable in comparison to ITO because humidity, pressure or UV light put a strain on the polymers causing the layers to become brittle and break down. The carbon nanotubes solve this problem by hardening on the PET to create a network that firmly anchors the electrically conducting polymers and provide much improved durability.

Ivica Kolaric, project manager from Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, concedes that "the electrical resistance of our layer is somewhat greater than that of the ITO, but it’s easily enough for an application in electrical systems,” and its advantages over ITO far outweigh its drawbacks.

In addition to indium’s limited supply, ITO layers are also fragile, lack flexibility, and the process to deposit them onto a surface requires a vacuum and is costly. In contrast, the researchers say carbon is renewable, low-cost and available all over the world from organic matter such as wood and the thin foil is flexible, making it suitable for applications other than touchscreens.

“We could even make photovoltaic foils out of it to line corrugated roofs or other uneven structures,” says Kolaric, who has already set up a pilot production where the foil can be enhanced for a wide range of applications.

Touchscreens Made of Carbon

Touchscreens are in – although the technology still has its price. The little screens contain rare and expensive elements. This is the reason why researchers at Fraunhofer are coming up with an alternative display made of low-priced renewable raw materials available all over the world. The researchers are presenting touchscreens that contain carbon nanotubes at the nano tech 2011 fair in Tokyo (Hall 5, Stand E-18-11) from February 16-18.

Just touching it slightly with the tips of your fingers is enough. You can effortlessly write, navigate, open menu windows or rotate images on touchscreens. Within fractions of a second your touch is translated into control commands that a computer understands. At first glance, this technology borders on the miraculous, but in real life this mystery just is a wafer-thin electrode under the glass surface of the display made of indium-tin-oxide, ITO.

This material is nothing short of ideal for use in touchscreens because it is excellent at conducting slight currents and lets the colors of the display pass through unhindered. But, there is a little problem: there are very few deposits of indium anywhere in the world. In the long term, the manufacturers of electronic gadgets are afraid that they will be dependent upon the prices set by suppliers. This is the reason why indium is one of what people call "strategic metals."

Therefore, private industry is very interested in alternatives to ITO that are similarly efficient. The researchers at Fraunhofer have succeeded at coming up with a new material for electrodes that is on the same level as ITO and on top of it is much cheaper.

Its main components are carbon nanotubes and low-cost polymers.

This new electrode foil is composed of two layers. One is the carrier, a thin foil made of inexpensive polyethylenterephthalate PET used for making plastic bottles. Then a mixture of carbon-nanotubes and electrically conducting polymers is added that is applied to the PET as a solution and forms a thin film when it dries.

In comparison to ITO, these combinations of plastics have not been particularly durable because humidity, pressure or UV light put a strain on the polymers. The layers became brittle and broke down. Only carbon nanotubes have made them stable.

The carbon nanotubes harden on the PET to create a network where the electrically conducting polymers can be firmly anchored. That means that this layer is durable in the long run. Ivica Kolaric, project manager from Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, concedes that "the electrical resistance of our layer is somewhat greater than that of the ITO, but it’s easily enough for an application in electrical systems." Its merits are unbeatable: carbon is not only low-cost and available all over the world. It is also a renewable resource that you can get from organic matter such as wood. Kolaric and his colleagues will be presenting their carbon touchdisplay at the 2011 nano tech fair. Since 2003 Fraunhofer researchers show their developments at the annual trade show.

There are a whole series of implementations for the new technology. This foil is flexible and can be used in a variety of ways. Kolaric sums up by saying "we could even make photovoltaic foils out of it to line corrugated roofs or other uneven structures." The researcher has already set up pilot production where the foil can be enhanced for a wide range of applications.

Hubblecast 42: Hubble's Greatest Hits.

What makes a scientific discovery really important? It's partly down to how much scientists use the discovery in subsequent work — but it's also partly down to what inspires their imagination. In this episode, the Hubblecast talks to some leading astronomers about their favourite Hubble discovery.

How do we know if a scientific discovery is really important, or somehow special?

Well, when astronomers obtain a result, they usually write it up in an article for a scientific journal. And one way to know whether the result is important or not is to look at how often other astronomers refer to this article in their work.

That's the simple answer anyway. But there's a human component too. Some results simply capture our imagination more than others, and that too is an important part of what makes a truly great discovery.

In this episode, we're going to be talking to some leading astronomers who use the Hubble Space Telescope, and we're going to ask them about their favourite Hubble moments.

Joe Liske: "There's so many discoveries that Hubble has made. Some that we knew we would make such as measuring the speed of the expansion of the Universe, verifying the existence of black holes, and then there's some that were completely unexpected. In fact, my favourite I think is one that when Hubble was launched, we didn't know about any extrasolar planets. So my favourite Hubble discovery if you will, is the measurement of the atmosphere of a planet around a nearby star, that was made by the STIS instrument. I think it really boggles the mind, or stimulates the imagination to think that here on Earth with a telescope in orbit, we can actually spy on other planets in other solar systems."

Bob O'Dell: "My favourite Hubble discovery is of course one of my own! It was a surprise that should not have been a surprise. When we first looked at the Orion nebula, this region of nearby star formation, we found that we could actually see protoplanetary discs around many of the stars. Now, we should have expected to see this, we should have been looking for it, but we were looking for something else and found that. It was a wonderful feeling, to discover the protoplanetary disc. It was the closest thing to a 'heureka' moment that I have ever had in science. You look at the image and then suddenly everything comes together. You know exactly what you've seen. And you're seeing something that no-one else had ever seen before. It was wonderful."

Laura Ferrarese: "I've done a lot of research with Hubble and in fact almost all my work has been done with or based on Hubble images. But perhaps my very favourite was this one galaxy that we observed very very early on. NGC 4261.
And what we saw when we looked at this galaxy was that there is a very small disc of gas and dust at the centre and we could use the velocity of the gas in the disc to measure the mass of the central supermassive black hole. And that was one of the very first conclusive evidence for the presence of a black hole in a galaxy."

Sandy Faber: "I think that my favourite Hubble discovery is based on aesthetics. And it's the imaging of these giant clusters of galaxies that show these beautiful gravitational lenses. The red cluster galaxies and the blue background galaxies. General relativity in action there, bending light and making images that are just stunning. I wish I had done that!"

Monica Tosi: "I tend to favour the wonderful images that have allowed to obtain very tight and deep colour-magnitude diagrams, see how stars form and evolve in nearby galaxies."

Joe Liske: "So clearly Hubble has made a lot of fantastic observations of the Universe during its lifetime. And I for one find it hard to pick what my favourite Hubble moment is. So one of my favourite Hubble achievements were the images Hubble took of planet Fomalhaut b. These were the first images of an extrasolar planet that were taken in optical light. And by using multiple observations, Hubble actually allowed us to watch this planet move on its orbit around its parent star. So another great Hubble moment were the images that it took of the so-called Bullet Cluster. These are actually two colliding clusters of galaxies that demonstrate beautifully the existence of dark matter. And then of course the Hubble Space Telescope measured the so-called Hubble constant, which is the expansion speed of the Universe. Hubble did this more precisely than was ever done before -- and of course this was one of the main reasons for building Hubble in the first place."
