AT&T plans to introduce 20 4G handsets and 12 Android-based smartphones in 2011 in order to counter Verizon Wireless which will begin to market iPhones in cooperation with Apple in the first quarter of 2011.
AT&T's move will benefit smartphone vendors including HTC, Samsung Electronics and Motorola Mobility, according to industry sources.
AT&T is building up its HSPA+ networks and is scheduled to launch 4G LTE services in mid-2011 with 4G smartphones running on operating systems including iOS, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phone 7, the sources indicated.
AT&T will launch 5-7 4G smartphones in the first half, including HTC's Inspire 4G and Motorola's Atrix 4G in the first quarter and Samsung's Infuse 4G in the second. All of the three models will run on Android 2.2.
In addition, AT&T also plans to launch two models of 4G-enabled tablet PCs in the summer, including Motorola's Android 3.0 tablet PC. It remains to be seen if Samsung, LG Electronics (LGE) and HTC will also win tablet PC orders from AT&T, said the sources.
