Canada: Retailers Cut Price of RIM’s PlayBook Tablet to $199.-

Wal-Mart, Staples and Best Buy in Canada are now offering Research in Motion Ltd.’s PlayBook tablets for under $200, down from an original price of $500.

Retailers had already discounted the PlayBook in September, a move echoed by U.S. retailers at the time.
RIM delayed the update of its PlayBook operating system from October to February of next year, which means that it won’t be able to take advantage of the holiday season. Buyers of the current PlayBook will still not be able to access email and other key tools unless they tether their tablet to a BlackBerry phone.
RIM said it sold just 200,000 PlayBooks in the most recent quarter, down from 500,000 the quarter before.
