Verizon LTE by this fall, AT&T LTE by mid-2011: Cellular providers switch to LTE
Prominent cellular providers in U.S.A are working on converting their networks to high speed 4G/LTE technologies. Following Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless and AT&T are soon expected to avail LTE network coverage in major cities in the country.
According to reports, Verizon, the largest cellular provider in the U.S. will commence to transfer network to LTE by the end of the year. Meanwhile, AT&T, the exclusive cellular partner of famous smartphone iPhone will only kick off activities to switch to next generation of network coverage be mid-2011.
In the U.S, it was Sprint that for the first time launched 4G network services. The carrier began to avail the service when it introduced HTC’s fourth-gen smartphone Evo 4G in June. As of now, Sprint provides its 4G WiMAX connectivity in 51 cities. Nashville is supposed to be the next city in the country to get 4G from Sprint, which hopes to cover 120 million customers with 4G by the end of 2010.
AT&T’s Operations CEO John Stankey recently announced at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2010 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference that his carrier will begin to offer 4G technologies by the middle of next year. Stankey said that once started the carrier can provide 4G coverage to at least 70 million customers all over the nation.
It is reported that Verizon plans to launch LTE network in almost 30 U.S. cities by this fall. The carrier has already started testing in Boston. Both the networks have not named the cities, which will get the service in the beginning.
