The Samsung Gear S will be available at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon in Nov 7. It will also be available at Samsung Experience Shops and Best Buy.
The Samsung Gear S is unique among other smartwatches on the market right now because it has standalone carrier network connectivity and 3G data, allowing the device to be used apart from your phone. This means you can make and receive phone calls and go online, all without needing your Samsung smartphone. However, you will still need your phone for OS updates to Tizen so it will not fully replace your smartphone.
With a 2-inch AMOLED display, the Samsung Gear S has more screen space and functionality than rival Android Wear devices. “Samsung continues to shape the wearable category with advanced technology and new experiences,” said Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung Telecommunications America and Samsung Electronics North America Headquarters. “A growing developer ecosystem will further expand the capabilities of the Gear S with fitness tracking services like Nike+ Running and on-wrist turn-by-turn navigation from HERE and more.”
The Samsung Gear S allows users to view and reply to notifications, emails, messages and social networks. The main input methods of the Samsung Gear S are S Voice for voice commands and a full QWERTY keyboard. The Samsung Gear S has a number of sensors, most of the ones you would expect like a smartwatch like, an accelerometer, UV sensor, barometer, heart rate monitor, GPS and an IP67 rating for dust- and water-resistance.
When there is a paired phone, the Gear S features turn-by-turn navigation provided by HERE.
The Samsung Gear S release date will be a bit later on T-Mobile, you can get the device on Nov. 9 for $0 down and $14.58/month for 24 months. That’s $349.92, which is rather pricey for the device, though to make up for it T-Mobile will offer the device with a custom rate plan for the Samsung Gear S, for $5 a month you can have unlimited talk, unlimited text, unlimited data up to 500 MB, unlimited music streaming through Milk Music, unlimited data and text in 120 different countries with Simple Global. AT&T has a pre-order page for the Samsung Gear S, but no information about pricing or a custom rate plan so far.
