LG`s SVLab Developers explain LG`s webOS Smart TV objective and features. Video.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

LG`s SunnyValle Lab Developers explain the objective and features of the LG`s webOS Smart TV  recently unveiled at CES 2014.

They explain the 3S: Simple Connection, Simple Switching and Simple Discovery. From the Press Release:

Simple to Connect, Easy to Use
The webOS platform, which will be implemented in more than 70 percent of LG’s Smart TVs in 2014, greatly simplifies the smart TV experience. Its ease-of-use makes content searching and viewing, connecting with other devices, and even the initial setup process incredibly smooth. The first time the user turns on the webOS-enabled LG Smart TV, an animated character named BeanBird appears onscreen to help get connected and walk the use through the setup process. All the viewer has to do is shake the Magic Remote or press the OK button to receive further advice from the winged virtual facilitator. webOS can instantly recognize when and what kind of external device has been plugged into the TV and brings up a pop-up menu listing all relevant options for the user to choose from.

Instant Access and Easy Content Switching
The new Launcher, a left-to-right scrollable menu that runs along the lower portion of the screen is one of the most distinctive features of webOS. The Launcher makes it possible to switch between broadcast TV, smart TV content and media stored on external devices without having to return to the Home screen. It allows the viewer to simultaneously watch a show, play a game or browse the internet while searching or downloading other content. What’s more, Live Menu, which can be opened while viewing the TV, keeps the search, recommendation and channel options within easy reach.

Content Discovery Made Simple
The webOS development team in LG’s Silicon Valley Lab created the unique Today menu as a one-stop content recommendation service, suggesting popular TV shows, programs that have been missed as well as full-feature movies. Running horizontally along the center of the screen, the Today bar can also be scrolled up or down via the Magic Remote wheel to reveal more exciting viewing options.

LG’s webOS also offers access to the LG Store’s comprehensive collection of apps. The LG Store lets users browse the most-viewed and most-downloaded items available from across the Smart TV platform, including broadcast TV programs and the latest games. The logically organized categories, which include 3D content, games and movies, employ thumbnail images for fast and convenient selection of content.

The nine-hour duration can satisfy all-day working needs.

In the tablet PC field, Lenovo has taken the lead in renovating the standardized modeling of tablet PC and launched the world's first multi-mode Yoga tablet PC. LG Ultra HD TVs with webOS Smart TV platform to offer Netflix in Ultra HD 4K

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

New webOS Smart TV Platform Perfect Match for 4K Streaming.

LG Electronics (LG) today announced that its broad new 2014 line of ULTRA HD TVs with LG’s proprietary webOS Smart TV platform will support content streaming in Ultra HD 4K from Netflix, the world’s leading Internet television network. LG’s 2014 4K TV lineup will be introduced for the first time this week at the 2014 International CES®.

“LG and Netflix have had a long-standing history of first-to-market introductions including the first network Blu-ray player to offer Netflix streaming back in 2008, which created the new category of Internet-connected consumer electronics devices,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, president and CTO, LG Electronics. “Netflix 4K content delivered on our amazing Ultra HD screens through our new webOS Smart TV platform will change the way consumers enjoy television.”

Reed Hastings, president and CEO of Netflix, speaking at LG’s CES press conference this morning, said: “As the world’s leading Internet TV network, Netflix will be among the first to deliver Ultra HD to consumers. Streaming will be the primary way consumers receive 4K content and we are excited to be working with LG to make this a reality later this year.”

TVs Ready for the Future
LG’s 2014 ULTRA HD TVs are designed to include the latest standards for connectivity, content protection and program encoding, meaning they equipped to handle 4K streaming*. Key to ensuring this capability is the built-in 4K HEVC 60p decoder. The LG TVs decode broadcast signals in both H.264 and HEVC H.265 formats, in either 30p or 60p.

“Content delivery has been the looming question with Ultra HD TVs ever since LG was the first to market with our 84-inch class TV in 2012,” said Sam Chang, LG Electronics USA senior vice president and head of the LG Silicon Valley Lab. “While our Tru-Ultra HD Engine provides excellent upscaled quality, the overall goal was always native 4K content delivery and Netflix was the perfect partner.”

Each TV also features LG’s new webOS Smart TV platform**, which includes a refreshingly intuitive user experience meant to make Smart TV simple again — a modern TV experience. Users can move back and forth between services in a more intelligent manner enabling smoother, faster transitions between screens. Additionally, the webOS’s Live Menu offers a variety of information, features and content including TV show recommendations, a search bar and previously viewed programs. LG and Netflix will also discuss partnering together to stream Ultra HD 4K content beyond the United States.

Visitors to LG’s CES booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204) from January 7 - 10 can experience webOS on LG’s latest OLED TVs, 4K ULTRA HD TVs and on other models from the company’s new year Home Entertainment lineup.

*4K/UHD content delivery standards still being developed.

Videos: LG webOS TV Overview and depth demostration. Multitasking is powerful.Pics.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

The two videos below show in every instance the powerful webOS multitasking. Although there is a row of cards on the launcher that can be interchanged between them, the webOS cards image of apps opened before are shown on the same row. There is also some kind of notification window on the top right of the  TV display that suggest a game , a movie etc according to the app you are on.

To surf on the TV display you have the LG remote control pointer, which works for anything you need to do on the TV.

The launcher row dissapears when you select to stay on any app, for example watching a movie, but can be called again to appear and change app.

OVERVIEW:

DEPTH DEMOSTRATION:

Phil McKinney comment:

I checked out the webOS TV from LG .. and bellow are some pictures. Some initial comments ...

1) The "card" navigation was changed lightly to accommodate the navigation on a non-touch screen. The team did a great job of maintaining the webOS feel while adjusting it to the form factor.
2) The performance was very good ...
3) The navigation with the "remote" was easy to learn/use ...
4) The app catalog look good to start with.

... the verdict?? I would love to have one!
