LG Electronics has announced that its next series of high-end smartphones will come with Nvidia's Tegra 2 mobile processor.
The LG's Optimus Series of smartphones, due to ship in the fourth quarter of 2010, will be the first smartphones to use the chip.
Although not officially lauched, Tegra 2 is a system-on-chip (SoC) based on 45nm dual-core ARM CORTEX A9 CPU architecture integrated with Nvidia's first low-power GeForce graphical processing unit (GPU).
The Tegra 2 is also designed into a variety of mobile devices, such as Toshiba's FOLIO 100 Android-based tablet, but none that are yet available.
The chip should demonstrate performance gains of two times faster web browsing and up to five times faster gaming performance over single core 1GHz processors, Nvidia said, and will be capable of 3D games as well as recording and playing back HD video.
Although SoCs are universally used in smartphones, they are beginning to be widely used among mobile devices, with the dedicated GPUs seen as a major reason for uptake by hardware manufacturers.
