Huawei and Ericsson are the big winners in TeliaSonera’s efforts to expand its LTE network in Norway. The operator today announced that Chinese vendor Huawei “is providing equipment for the southern part of the network and Ericsson for the northern part.”
Although the radio access network (base station) contracts are for deployment of ‘combined’ GSM, WCDMA, HSPA and LTE technology, it is the LTE part of the deal that will generate most industry interest. TeliaSonera aims to cover 89 percent of the Norwegian population with LTE services by 2012.
TeliaSonera initially launched LTE in Oslo, Norway, in December 2009, using kit from Huawei. The following month the operator announced expansion deals in the country with Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) – no mention of NSN was made in today’s latest network deal.
As well as Norway, TeliaSonera has launched LTE services in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Estonia and was the first operator in the world to commercially launch the technology.
