From microsoft website:
We periodically release Windows Phone software updates to add new features you've asked for and to maximize your phone's performance. When a software update is available for you to download, we'll notify you on your phone.
Before you start
- 1
Check to see if an update is available. On Start, flick left to the App list, and then tap Settings > Phone update. To make sure you're notified in the future, select the Notify me when new updates are found check box.
Tip
To see which software version you have on your phone: on Start, flick left to the App list, and then tap Settings > About > More info.
To find it on the Zune software on your PC: connect your phone to your computer, then click Start > Zune > Settings > Phone > Update.
- 2
Make sure you have plenty of space on your phone and computer.
Before updating your phone, the Zune software and Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac will attempt to back up your phone data to your computer, so you'll need to know how much space your data is using on your phone. On Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings > About, and then compare the Total Storage to the Available Storage on your phone. If you have 6 GB of data stored on your phone, for example, you'll need 6 GB of space on your computer to back it up.
To learn more about freeing up storage space, see Make room on my phone to update it and Make room on my computer for phone updates.
- 3
Install the Zune software on your PC or Windows Phone 7 Connector on your Mac. You'll need these programs to download the update to your phone.
- 4
Make sure your phone's battery is fully charged. You can speed up recharging by plugging your phone into the wall charger that came with the phone.
- 5
Make sure your computer has a reliable Internet connection. In some cases, you might need to switch from a wireless (Wi-Fi) connection to a wired (Ethernet) connection. Or you might need to adjust your computer's firewall or proxy settings. For more info, see the Network connection problems in Windows tutorial.
Update your phone
- 1
Connect your phone to your primary computer—the first one you connected your phone to—using the USB cable that came with your phone. Make sure you keep your phone connected throughout the update process. (If you're using a different computer than you normally use, please see some important information in the Notes below.)
- 2
If the Zune software or Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac (the sync software) doesn't start automatically when you connect your phone, start it manually.
- 3
We might ask you to update the Zune software or Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. If we do, just follow the on-screen instructions. Then restart the sync software.
- 4
Now you're ready to update your phone. In the Zune software, click Update Now. In the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac, click Install Updates.
Notes
- •
If you missed our first notification, we'll remind you again in a few days. If you want to check to see if a phone update is available, do this: on Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings, and then tap Phone update.
- •
Your primary computer (the first one you connected your phone to) remembers your phone's settings and history, making it the best computer to use for all your phone updates. If you need to use a different computer, see Syncing your Zune player or phone to another computer.
- •
The Zune software will show an estimate of the time it will take to update your phone. How long it will take depends on what's on your phone. If you have lots of apps or a large music collection, the update might take up to an hour.
- •
You'll see the update's progress in the sync software. You can safely cancel the update until the end of the backup process. Once the backup process finishes and the update actually begins on your phone, it can't be interrupted. If you accidentally cancel it at this point, see The Zune software stops responding when attempting to back up Windows Phone 7.
- •
By default, your phone uses your cellular data connection to check for updates and notifies you when an update is found. To change the type of connection for future updates, do this: on Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings , and then tap Phone update.
