Motorola invests in cross-platform games developer Moblyng

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Motorola Mobility has invested in Moblyng, a developer and publisher of cross-platform, HTML5-based games for mobile devices and social networks.

According to Motorola, Moblyng has published games for Android, Facebook, iOS and WebOS platforms, which have been downloaded more than 9 million times.

Motorola did not state how much it has invested in the company, although the transaction was undertaken through its Motorola Mobility Ventures arm. Investors Mohr Davidow Ventures and Deep Fork Capital also participated in the round.

It was reported earlier this week that Motorola is looking to make small acquisitions of software businesses in order to make it a more “software-centric” company, having previously been well known for its hardware capabilities.

In addition, by bolstering its software proposition it will be better able to differentiate itself from its Android rivals, including HTC, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

In a statement, Harshul Sanghi, MD of Motorola Mobility Ventures, noted that “Moblyng was an early adopter of Android and is an industry leader in using HTML5 to bring cross-platform social gaming experiences to mobile devices.”

According to Motorola, Moblyng is “well known both for its own titles – such as m:Racing and Dungeon Quest for the Android platform – and partnering with leading publishers such as Playdom to extend their games and brands to mobile devices and social platforms such as Facebook."
