Videos: Apple Predicted Siri Assistant (Knowledge Navigator) Over 20 Years Ago

Apple Predicted Siri Assistant (Knowlegde Navigator) Over 20 Years Ago.

Siri isn’t just a feature Apple’s been knocking together in the past couple of years. In the video above, the company predicts the Siri assistant — then named the Knowledge Navigator — back in 1987.

Like Siri, Knowledge Navigator allows a user to interact with their device in the most intimate way — by talking to it. The gentleman in the video searches for information online, schedules meetings and reminders, and makes calls, simply by telling his assistant what to do.

Admittedly, Knowledge Navigator, although on an older device, is a little more advanced than Siri. For example, Siri doesn’t yet field calls from your mother, or wear a white tuxedo. But give it time.

What’s most amazing about this video is that, if you listen carefully, you’ll hear that the actor requests information from an academic paper written around five years ago, in 2006. That makes the year 2011. The date on the device is September 16. In reality, Siri was announced on October 4, 2011 — just 25 days after Apple’s prediction in 1987.
