HP webOS coming to DesignJet printers after all, next year.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Well, this is contradictory news as we recently posted a rumor of Amazon to buy HP webOS, now a HP spokesperson has exclusively told Pocket-lint that the company is to incorporate the supposedly dead webOS into its printers.

“HP is currently investigating using WebOS on its Designjet range of professional printers,” HP told Pocket-lint at the HP Impact event in Dublin.

That leads us to believe that the mobile operating system is also coming to consumer grade Hewlett Packard printing products very soon.

Whilst the source was unsure at to whether HP would have anything ready to show this year, we were told that WebOS would be appearing next year.

Rumor: Amazon is a one click on the shopping cart for HP webOS ?

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

VentureBeat is reporting that a well-placed source tells them that HP is currently looking to rid itself of Palm as soon as possible, and that Amazon is the closest to finalizing the deal, among a handful of contenders.

"It also appears that HP has been eyeing Amazon for some time as a potential webOS partner. In an interview with This is my next in July, Rubinstein revealed quite a bit about having Amazon use webOS in its future tablets:
So, we’d like a partner that would allow us to expand the webOS ecosystem… There’s a variety of different sets of a characteristics to qualify as a good partner. I would say Amazon would certainly make a great partner, because they have a lot of characteristics that would help them expand the webOS ecosystem. As to whether there’s been discussions or not… that’s obviously not something I’m going to comment about.
HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm in 2010, but Amazon will end up spending a fraction of that if the deal goes through. Given just how badly the TouchPad failed, HP will likely offer what’s left of Palm at a major discount, especially since Amazon woudn’t be interested in resuscitating now extinct webOS hardware. "

Samsung to produce Flexible AMOLED displays in Q4 2012, lighter and thinner smartphones to come.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

According to a report from Korean language news site DDaily,Samsung  will begin producing flexible AMOLED displays this quarter. The panels are said to be less than half as thick as current-generation panels, measuring just 0.6 millimeters compared to 1.8 millimeters. The publication notes, however, that the initial displays will be protected by inflexible glass rather than a flexible plastic layer needed for use in a flexible device. Samsung is reportedly planning to release a device with an ultra-thin flexible AMOLED display by the end of the year, and is looking to begin mass production of truly flexible displays by 2014.

One official said, "more than half the thickness as well as reducing weight and thinner and lighter smartphones will be able to come," he said.

Below you can read how this technology could work, a Galaxy Skin smartphone concept included on our before post we wrote in 2011:

This was the headlines of our before post:

Revolutionary: Samsung to bring up  the Flexible Amoled Galaxy SKIN smartphone for,.spring 2012 with Android Flexy OS

Advocating a genius phone that exceeds a smartphone, Galaxy Skin's biggest characteristic is that it can be folded, bent, and twisted, using the flexible display.

Moreover, the design of the Galaxy Skin concept is that its shape changes according to the application. For example, if the mouse application is activated, the hand phone could be folded into the shape of mouse and be used as the mouse itself.

Also, when the clock application is in use, it can be folded as a clock and can actually sit up on a table. Along with this, if the projector application is in use, it can be used as the projector, folded into its shape, and when DMB is in play, it becomes a small TV.

Its core technology is flexible display along with Electro Active Polymer that changes the physical shape when the electric signal is sent. In other words, when the electric data signal such as 'bend 3cm outward,' is sent, the physical shape really changes bending 3cm outward.

▶ 4 inch Super Amoled display, WVGA resolution with flexible design
▶ 3.5G network and 4G HSDPA
▶ Android Flexy os (still not confirmed, this is maybe new os)
▶ 1.2GHz dual core processor (at this time July 22, the chip will be upgraded)
▶ 8MP rear facing camera
▶ 1GB of RAM
▶ 16/32GB internal storage
▶ Dimension: 221mm x 67mm x 8 mm
▶ Battery: 1500 mAh
▶ Connectivity: Bluetooth versi 3.0, USB versi 2.0 (high speed), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n

Surpassing all smartphones is the genius phone Galaxy Skin. If this really does launch, there will be a huge wave of uproar!

Although the flexible AMOLED continues to be developed and has been already commercialized, the commercialization of other parts of the concept cannot be promised. All I can do now is just wait with great anticipation for a smartphone equipped with a flexible AMOLED display.

Based on the person who suggested the concept, the flexible display already reached the step to commercialization in Samsung Mobile display. Samsung had been showing off some seriously wafer-thin, flexible AMOLED displays at CES in Las Vegas. Also, Electro Active Polymer is already utilized as artificial muscle, and it is at the step of commercialization of mass production to graft onto devices.

Other than these, geared with sensor grafted with the sensibility ITC, the display changes color according to the temperature change of the weather like 'my SKIN.' And it charges the battery from the solar heat as if to photosynthesize. Also it is planned to be geared with the engine that arranges automatically and provides the interface environment suitable to the user, responding to the body's activity and rhythm.

Below is a YouTube video of the Samsung Flexible Display withstanding a malicious hammering. This was uploaded about a year ago but is receiving much attention these days.

The design research team at Hongik University that suggested the Galaxy Skin concept said that it will be the item for Samsung to catch themselves up with the iPhone and iPad—to turn over the dynamics of mobile device. They also said that it is the blueprint of the future that shows how 'Smartphone can become anything' through the high technology and the sensibility that satisfies the users' innate tendencies.

The Life of George new LEGO game for iPhone.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

New app will challenge users to build with Lego blocks and use the iPhone's camera to assess the results.

Now here’s an unexpected pairing that makes a wacky sort of sense: LEGO and iPhones.

The Danish company responsible for the iconic building blocks announced its new interactive iPhone app this week, and it’s an interesting one, to say the least.

Titled The Life of George, the app challenges users to quickly build small models using real LEGO bricks and then snap a photo of the finished product with the iPhone’s camera. Points are then awarded for accuracy and speed.
Sounds easy enough, but before you start building, you’ll need to purchase a real-world retail package required for the app. The package comes with all the necessary blocks and a special pad that facilitates pattern recognition on the app.

The game will feature 12 levels of brick-manipulating challenges, all of which revolve around George, a tech-savvy character who travels the world. Users will build things like George’s board shorts, a pineapple, or other items he encounters during his travels.

LEGO has indicated that, along with the specified models in the game, there will also be a “My Life” feature that allows users to create their own models. The company plans to add some element of Facebook-facilitated sharing of these models down the road.

At this point, the app is iOS-only and limited to the iPhone and 4th-generation iPod touch, though LEGO has indicated that an Android version is being considered. The Life of George will retail for $29.99, and is only available at LEGO’s website and LEGO retail stores for now.

NTT Docomo and Orange to source an Android smartphone from Sharp

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

NTT Docomo said that it will work with Orange to source an Android smartphone from vendor Sharp, “marking the first time for an overseas operator to deploy a Docomo smartphone.”

The Japanese operator said that the device, sold as Aquos Phone SH-12C in Japan, has been redesigned for the European market, and renamed Aquos Phone SH80F. It has been described as Orange’s “first mobile device capable of converting images and videos from 2D to 3D in real time.”

Microsoft and Samsung signed a patent cross licensing agreement.

WorldWide Tech & Science Francisco De Jesús.

Microsoft announced a patent cross licensing agreement with Samsung, which will see it receive royalties for the South Korean vendor’s “mobile phones and tablets running the Android platform.” The companies will also “cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone.”

It was reported earlier this year that Microsoft was targeting Samsung as part of its strategy to generate patent licensing revenue from Android device manufacturers, having already secured a deal with HTC and a number of  tier-two vendors. Terms of the current deal have not been disclosed, but a figure of US$10 per handset was previously mooted – if Samsung agreed to a deeper engagement with Windows Phone.

Market watcher Asymco previously said that Microsoft receives more revenue from HTC´s licensing of patents for Android devices than it does for its own Windows Phone platform, and with Samsung closing in fast on the number-one handset vendor spot, the current deal is certainly significant.

Microsoft also has legal actions active with several Android device makers, including (notably) Motorola – which is in the process of being acquired by Google. Indeed, the fact that Microsoft is pursuing this course was seen as an indicator that Motorola’s patent portfolio, one of the motivators for the Google deal, is not enough alone to deter aggressors.

HP Introduces World’s Most Versatile and Productive Digital Label Press.

HP Indigo Digital Presses continue to lead the market for premium-quality color labels and packaging.

BRUSSELS, Belgium, Sept. 28, 2011

HP today announced the industry’s most versatile and productive digital label press, the HP Indigo WS6600 Digital Press, which is capable of printing more than 40 linear meters per minute in full color and features a new in-line priming unit.

Other features for improved productivity include an improved white ink option and new solutions from partners for managing the complete digital production of labels and packaging.

HP also introduced the industry’s most productive entry-level solution for digital labels, the HP Indigo WS4600 Digital Press, with an option for full-color throughput of more than 21 linear meters per minute. Both the WS6600 and WS4600 deliver higher throughput via a new Enhanced Productivity Mode developed by HP.(1)

“With the Indigo WS6600, we can produce jobs of over 10,000 linear meters with the outstanding quality that our customers are demanding, and still deliver fast turnaround,” said Roger Gehrke, executive manager of Digital Printing at beta user RAKO ETIKETTEN in Wizhave, Germany.

Participants in a blind-test packaging industry label sample evaluation said they preferred HP Indigo print quality over flexography by a four-to-one margin.(2)

“There is increasing demand among top global brands to produce color labels and shrink sleeves on HP Indigo presses, based on their superior quality and rich color,” said Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager, Indigo division, HP. “Now with the new productivity enhancements, our customers can use Indigo presses to achieve this level of color quality on almost any job length.”

HP is showcasing the new digital presses and solutions during Labelexpo Europe, the label and packaging industry’s largest conference.

Both the WS6600 and the WS4600 are available now. Many of the new options are planned to be available early next year as upgrade features for the HP Indigo WS6000 and ws4500 to protect and extend customer investments.

Take-back and recycling program expanded
HP also announced that its HP Indigo ink cartridge and imaging oil take-back and recycling program is now available in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, and is open to all HP Indigo customers in those countries. This convenient service, available at no additional cost, can be requested through the MyHPIndigo customer portal.

Leading the industry with a better brand experience
HP Indigo presses offer an all-digital production method that requires little in the way of make-ready, start-up time or minimum run-length requirements. This can help create greater shelf impact and increase customer profit through reduced waste and obsolescence, streamlined multi-SKU marketing and versioning, and faster implementation of new designs.

HP Indigo’s proven and unparalleled liquid electrophotographic printing process meets top brands’ uncompromising demands for top-quality printing and packaging shelf appeal.

HP offers flexible financing solutions for customers deploying the latest HP digital printing technology through HP Financial Services, the company’s leasing and life cycle asset management services division. An HP Financial Services representative is onsite at Labelexpo to provide details of applicable offers. Information also is available at www.hp.com/hpfinancialservices.

A seven-inch Android tablet focused heavily on media consumption, priced way below Apple’s iPad.

But the $199 price — $300 below Apple’s cheapest tablet — is lower than than the most optimistic reports I’ve seen. For context, recall that Amazon’s now-primitive original Kindle started out at $399 in 2007.
So yes, this is serious competition for the iPad.

Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos used some of his stage time to introduce a new line of touchscreen, black-and-white Kindles, priced at $99 and $149, and cut his lowest-priced device, which still uses old-timey buttons, to $80.
“We’re going to sell many millions of these,” Bezos said, over and over again. No reason to doubt him.
