2014: Samsung is #1 smartwatch vendor worldwide. Pebble is second.

According to market research firm Statista Samsung leads the worldwide smartwatch market by units sales in year 2014 with 1.200.000 units sold (17.65%), followed by the startup Pebble with 700.000 units sold

Apple is due to launch its highly anticipated smartwatch today, marking the company's first attempt at entering a new technology category since Steve Jobs's death. In 2014, 89 companies sold 6.8 million smartwatches across the world and the average price per watch worked out at $189.

Who are the main players in the smartwatch market? Like the smartphone market, Samsung is going to be Apple's main competitor. The South Korean technology behemoth sold approximately 1.2 million units in 2014, ahead of second placed Pebble with 700,000. The top three was rounded off by Fitbit who sold 600,000 smartwatches.

4Q 2014. Gartner says: Apple 20.4%, Samsung 19.9% Lenovo 6.6% on worldwide smartphones market share. Full 2014 Samsung stills #1 .

There are numbers differences between what IDC reasearch firm says here and what Gartner says below:

Gartner Says Smartphone Sales Surpassed One Billion Units in 2014

Smartphone Sales Represented Two-Thirds of Global Phone Market in 2014
In Fourth Quarter of 2014 Samsung Lost No. 1 Position to Apple in Global Smartphone Market
Worldwide sales of smartphones to end users had a record fourth quarter of 2014 with an increase of 29.9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2013 to reach 367.5 million units, according to Gartner, Inc. Samsung lost the No. 1 spot to Apple in the global smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2014 (see Table 1). Samsung had been in the top spot since 2011.
In 2014, sales of smartphones to end users totaled 1.2 billion units, up 28.4 percent from 2013 (see Table 2) and represented two-thirds of global mobile phone sales.
"Samsung's performance in the smartphone market deteriorated further in the fourth quarter of 2014, when it lost nearly 10 percentage points in market share," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. "Samsung continues to struggle to control its falling smartphone share, which was at its highest in the third quarter of 2013. This downward trend shows that Samsung's share of profitable premium smartphone users has come under significant pressure."
"With Apple dominating the premium phone market and the Chinese vendors increasingly offering quality hardware at lower prices, it is through a solid ecosystem of apps, content and services unique to Samsung devices that Samsung can secure more loyalty and longer-term differentiation at the high end of the market," said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner.
Apple: Apple reported its best quarter ever in the fourth quarter of 2014, which saw it sell 74.8 million units and move to the No. 1 position in the global smartphone market. Apple's first ever large-screen phones continued to see huge demand with sales in China and U.S., growing at 56 percent and 88 percent, respectively. Apple's strong ecosystem and its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus drove strong replacements within the iOS base. These new smartphones also offered new users, who are looking for larger screen phones, a strong alternative to Android.
Lenovo: In the fourth quarter of 2014, Lenovo*, which includes sales of mobile phones by Lenovo and Motorola, moved to the No. 3 spot in the global smartphone market, reaching 6.6 percent market share and growing 47.6 percent year over year. Lenovo's sales of mobile phones in its home market, China, grew 7.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2014. In addition, its strong mobile phone sales in Russia, India, Indonesia and Brazil in the fourth quarter of 2014 helped it grow by 26 percent in the global mobile phone market.
Chinese vendors, such as Huawei and Xiaomi, are continuing to improve their sales in China and other overseas markets, increasing their share in the mid to low-end smartphone market. "Chinese vendors are no longer followers," said Ms. Cozza. "They are producing higher quality devices with appealing new hardware features that can rival the more established players in the mobile phone market. Brand building and marketing will be key activities in deciding which Chinese vendors can secure a foothold in mature markets."
The availability of smartphones at lower prices accelerated the migration of feature phone users to smartphones pushing the smartphone operating system (OS) market to double-digit growth in most emerging countries, including India, Russia and Mexico. This trend continued to benefit Android, which saw its market share grow 2.2 percentage points in 2014, and 32 percent year on year (see Table 3). Chinese and other smaller players drove Android's performance in 2014, while more established players at the higher end of the market continued to struggle to increase stickiness to their brands and ecosystems. Windows Phone's performance was flat but it recorded strong results in some markets in Europe, and in the business segment.

LG reports Financial results of 2014. Net profit up in 125%

24 Percent Jump in LG Smartphone Shipments
Contributes to Company’s Improved Profitability

LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced net profit of KRW 501.40 billion (USD 474.81 million) for full-year 2014, an increase of 125 percent over 2013 net profit. Operating profit increased significantly in 2014 to KRW 1.83 trillion (USD 1.73 billion) from KRW 1.25 trillion (USD 1.14 billion) in 2013, an increase of 46 percent. Full-year consolidated revenue of KRW 59.04 trillion (USD 55.91 billion) was mainly boosted by a 24 percent increase in smartphone shipments.

Fourth-quarter 2014 consolidated revenue was KRW 15.27 trillion (USD 14.06 billion) with an operating profit of KRW 275.1 billion (USD 253.31 million), an increase of 28 percent from the same period the previous year. Net profit for the fourth quarter ending Dec. 31, 2014 showed a net loss of KRW 205.7 billion (USD 189.41 million) primarily due to the write-off resulting from the closure of LG’s plasma TV operations.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported full-year operating profit of KRW 509 billion (USD 482.01 million), an increase of 31 percent year-on-year while full-year revenue increased slightly to 19.38 trillion (USD 18.35 billion). Fourth-quarter revenue increased 20 percent quarter-on-quarter to KRW 5.43 trillion (USD 5.00 billion) as a result of increased TV demand during the peak selling season in Europe, CIS and North America. Despite higher competition and weaker currency movements in emerging markets, the company is optimistic that the premium segment — OLED and ULTRA HD TVs — will continue to grow, along with the digital signage industry.

The LG Mobile Communications Company reported a 16 percent increase in annual revenue to KRW 15.06 trillion (USD 14.26 billion) with help from North America, where shipments increased 78 percent during the fourth quarter of 2014 from the previous year. Fourth-quarter revenue of 3.78 trillion (USD 3.48 billion) was 5 percent higher than the same period in 2013. A total of 59.1 million smartphones were shipped in 2014, an increase of 24 percent from the previous year, among 78.2 million mobile handsets sold last year. Expecting a challenging year ahead with greater competition globally from various manufacturers, LG will concentrate on improving its brand power, operating more efficiently, and focusing on selective key markets.

The LG Home Appliance Company reported full-year 2014 sales of KRW 11.54 trillion (USD 10.93 billion) where the company saw stronger sales in Europe and emerging markets such as the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, offsetting somewhat slower sales in North America. Fourth-quarter revenue of 2.88 trillion (USD 2.65 billion) was up slightly from the same period 2013 while operating profit of KRW 85 billion (USD 78.27 million) was 64 percent higher quarter-on-quarter and up 2 percent from the same period the previous year. The company will respond to the expected sluggish overall demand this year by innovating in energy efficient products and improving cost competitiveness.

The LG Air Conditioning & Energy Solutions Company reported full-year revenue of KRW 4.56 trillion (USD 4.32 billion) and operating profit of KRW 255.1 billion (USD 241.57 million). Fourth-quarter sales of KRW 781.4 billion (USD 719.52 million) increased 9 percent from the same period in 2013, primarily due to incremental growth of commercial air-conditioners. LG plans to overcome the uncertainty of the global economy by improving cost and product competitiveness with more energy-efficient products.

2014Q Exchange Rates Explained
LG Electronics’ unaudited quarterly earnings results are based on IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) for the three-month period starting January 1, 2014. Worldwide Tablet Growth Expected to Slow to 7.2% in 2014 Along With First Year of iPad Decline, says IDC

The worldwide tablet market is expected to see a massive deceleration in 2014 with year-over-year growth slowing to 7.2%, down from 52.5% in 2013, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC). At the core of this slowdown is the expectation that 2014 will represent the first full year of decline in Apple iPad shipments. Both the iPad and the overall market slowdown do not come as a surprise as device lifecycles for tablets have continued to lengthen, increasingly resembling those of PCs more than smartphones.

"The tablet market continues to be impacted by a few major trends happening in relevant markets," said Ryan Reith, Program Director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers. "In the early stages of the tablet market, device lifecycles were expected to resemble those of smartphones, with replacement occurring every 2-3 years. What has played out instead is that many tablet owners are holding onto their devices for more than 3 years and in some instances more than 4 years. We believe the two major drivers for longer than expected tablet lifecycles are legacy software support for older products, especially within iOS, and the increased use of smartphones for a variety of computing tasks."

Among different form factors and product groups, significant advancements have been made recently by hardware manufacturers to advance the 2-in-1, or detachable, product category. Devices have become thinner, prices have come down, and more models are available. Despite these advances, shipments of 2-in-1 devices are only expected to reach 8.7 million units in 2014, which is just 4% of the total tablet plus 2-in-1 market. A large reason for the relatively small uptake has been consumer hesitancy around the Windows 8 platform, which the majority of 2-in-1 devices are built upon.

"We need to look at how the tablet ecosystem is answering these challenges, and right now we see a lot of pressure on tablet prices and an influx of entry-level products, which ultimately serves Android really well," said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director for Tablets. "But we also see tablet manufacturers trying to offset this price pressure by focusing on larger screens and cellular-enabled tablets. The next six months should be really interesting."

Looking forward, the few unknowns that could impact overall tablet shipments are: the industry reaction to Windows 10; what Google does in this space with Android and Chrome OS; and Apple's rumored product line expansion. Despite all of these unknowns, it seems clear that consumers can be expected to hold onto tablets longer than smartphones.

Half of all smartphones this year will have high definition or higher resolution displays.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

4K×2K UHD Smartphone Shipments Forecast to Reach 23 Million Units in 2015, According to NPD DisplaySearch.

Half of all smartphones this year will have high definition or higher resolution displays.

In 2015, the first year that 4K×2K, or ultra-high-definition (UHD), smartphones will become available to consumers, global shipments are forecast to reach 23 million. According to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Smartphone Quarterly, 4K×2K displays will account for more than 5% of smartphone shipments in North America and Japan in 2015, and just under 5% in Western Europe.

Global smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.2 billion in 2014. With a three-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13%, shipments will rise to 1.7 billion by 2017. Although entry-level smartphones priced below $200 will account for 35% of total smartphone shipments in 2014, the average display resolution will continue to increase globally.
Global shipments of smartphones with high-definition (HD) and full-high-definition (FHD) screens are forecast to reach 570 million in 2014. 2K displays (also known as wide-quad-HD) shipments are also expected to reach significant levels. NPD DisplaySearch forecasts 41 million will ship in 2014. AUO, JDI, Samsung, and other display-panel manufacturers already have 2K displays in production, and applications processor and GPU (graphic processor unit) vendors have products ready to support and handle display resolutions beyond 1080p.
All told, smartphones with HD and higher display resolutions will comprise over half of global shipments in 2014, up from 29% in 2013.

“Market growth for smartphones with high-definition screens is being fueled by increasingly affordable application processors, which along with increased production of high resolution smartphone displays are enabling brands to provide greater resolution and lower power consumption at lower prices,” said Tina Teng, senior analyst for smartphones at NPD DisplaySearch. “In the maturing smartphone ecosystem consumers can expect far better visual performance and improved gaming experience.”

LG`s CES 2014 Recap.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

LG recaps all devices and its features presented in the last CES 2014:

The LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV with webOS, the OLED TV FAMILY, the 4K ULTRA HD TV, and the LIFEBAND TOUCH & HEART RATE EARPHONES.

Press Release:

With LG, It’s All Possible – LG Booth Tour of CES 2014.

While CES has come to a close for the year, we’re still buzzing from the wonderful time we had in Las Vegas!

For those who are still reminiscing your time at CES 2014 or for those who are kicking themselves because they couldn’t make it to this year, we’ve prepared an insider’s coverage of LG’s newest, most innovative products of the year.

LG displayed a series of eye-catching products and all the products were showered with much praise for their innovative and practical features to enhance the lives of their users! So in this post, we will take you on a virtual tour of the LG booth at CES 2014 and introduce you to some of our show stopper products and expand your views on the advancement of human technology.

LG booth has always been a popular hot spot for visitors but this year, it was particularly overflowing and absolutely jam packed full of people. As a central attraction point of the Las Vegas Convention Center, visitors from all parts of the world came to the LG booth from the early mornings to experience LG’s latest and trendiest products.

The LG Booth was bustling with excited visitors around the clock >

Now that you have a taste of the onsite atmosphere, let us take you through the biggest attractions of CES 2014!

LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV with webOS

At the center of this year’s LG Booth, we presented one of the biggest developments for LG’s TV range: webOS. This new operating system offers an intuitive user interface for an experience that “makes TV simple again”.

Remember the days when all there was to a TV was ‘on’, ‘off’, ‘volume up/down’ and ‘channel up/down’?

While your TV couldn’t do anything extraordinary, there was merit to its simple and uncomplicated nature. So LG thought long and hard about how that simplicity could be applied to today’s wonderful but complex devices and came up with webOS. This operating system is both seamless and refreshingly uncomplicated which translates into everyday life as you can return to the days when your brain can take a break while maneuvering the modern tech in your TV.

Because a “high tech simple TV” sounds like an oxymoron to most, throughout the day, the demo team showcased how easy it is to set up webOS from scratch and how the system provides a simple and hassle free experience. Combined with the use of LG’s Magic Remote, webOS makes content searching and viewing, connecting with other devices, and even the initial setup process incredibly smooth, even for first timers.

This truly smart and convenient operating system will be implemented in the majority of LG TVs in 2014. So while you may have missed the chance to test it out at CES, we’re sure you’ll have a chance to experience it first in the near future.

OLED TV FAMILY
Adjacent to the webOS demonstration zone, the next must-see area of the LG Booth and one of the most crowded areas was no doubt the comprehensive OLED TV lineup display zone. Starting from the world’s largest 77 inch 4K ULTRA HD CURVED OLED (model 77EC9800) TV to the various 55- and 65-inch OLED TV models, the elegant GALLERY OLED TV (model 55EA8800) and the CURVED OLED TV (model 55EB9600) with its friendly environmental footprint were also on display.

The 77 inch 4K ULTRA HD CURVED OLED TV in particular, was showered with attention and praise for driving the evolution of television into the next generation. The powerful combination between LG’s proprietary WRGB OLED technology and 4K Ultra HD screen resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) boosted the level of picture quality and viewer immersion into a whole new stratosphere. As a standout even among LG’s latest products, the 77-inch model received the highly coveted Best of Innovations at the 2014 CES Innovations Awards.

Another giant among the TVs to be unveiled at this year’s CES was the world’s first 77’’ 4K Flexible OLED TV by LG. What separates LG’s Flexible OLED TV from every other TV set in the world is that the display curvature can be changed using the TV remote to suit the viewer’s preference. The range of curvature was determined by taking into account key factors that affect the viewing experience such as screen size and viewing distance. Sounds like something from a science fiction movie, doesn’t it?

This product was definitely not to be missed because one simply has to see it to believe that they now coexist with something as surreal and futuristic as a curving TV!

4K ULTRA HD TV
There was never time to gather one’s breathe after each product zone. Direct from the mind blowing experience of the OLED TV family, to the right, one could see the 4K ULTRA HD TV lineup. Raising the standards once more, the steady collection of premium UB9800 series 4K ULTRA HD TV lineup comprised of 65-, 79-, 84- and 98-inch units were on exhibit.

The UB9800 series could stand shoulder to shoulder with the modern technologies of LG’s more recent TV lineups thanks to an upgraded picture and sound quality. Equipped with a unique proprietary chip, the Ultra HD resolution has been enhanced and the overall image quality optimized to highlight LG’s IPS technology.
Sound quality was also improved on with the collaboration with harman/kardon®.

Before leaving the ULTRA HD 4K TV display section, all visitors made sure to stop by the godfather of the ULTRA HD 4K clan – the massive 105-inch CURVED ULTRA HD TV (105UC9) with a 21:9 aspect ratio. As you would have seen on the news and in newspapers by now, the 105-inch CURVED ULTRA HD TV turned a LOT of heads as a simply outstanding piece of future technology with beautiful design and an unmatched cinematic viewing experience.

After the 105-inch CURVED ULTRA HD TV, most visitors stopped by the PC display section and mobile section to check out products that are more affordable for future purchases.

This route then finally brought visitors to not only the affordable and practical but also innovative lifestyle fitness section!

LIFEBAND TOUCH & HEART RATE EARPHONES
As a trend setter and industry leader, we couldn’t leave out LG’s first products in its wearable technology ecosystem, the LG Lifeband Touch and LG Heart Rate Earphones. These two wearable products not only mark the company’s first wearable tech, but highlight LG’s core philosophy of improving consumers’ everyday lives.

In addition to their core fitness tech, both products incorporate comfortable designs and compatibility with other devices so that monitoring one’s health requires no additional effort beyond strapping on a watch and inserting a pair of headphone ear buds.

According to Jim Clayton, executive vice president of LG’s New Business Division in the Home Entertainment Company, “[LG] wanted to introduce wearable fitness products that met the expectations of today’s tech savvy consumers and brought something new to the table, which in our case meant exceptional design, comfort and functionality.” He added, “The uniqueness of our wearable devices is that they weren’t just designed for exercise but also for day-to-day use in the office or around the home.

With Lifeband Touch, you can get call and text notifications sent from your smartphone while the Heart Rate Earphones are perfectly happy playing back music all day even when you’re not exercising. These are much more than just fitness devices.”

Until Next Year…
So there you have it – a quick glance at some of the most buzzed products. We hope you enjoyed the tour as much as we enjoyed capturing each display zone directly from the LG Booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Central Hall #8204.

While the CES may be over, it’s only the beginning of what we promise to be an exciting year of innovative and never-seen-before products from LG. Keep in touch with us for more!

Worldwide combined shipments of PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones projected to reach 2.5 billion units in 2014. A 7.6%+

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesùs.

Gartner Says Worldwide Traditional PC, Tablet, Ultramobile and Mobile Phone Shipments On Pace to Grow 7.6 Percent in 2014.

Android to Surpass One Billion Users Across all Devices in 2014.
Worldwide combined shipments of devices (PCs, tablets, ultramobiles and mobile phones) are projected to reach 2.5 billion units in 2014, a 7.6 percent increase from 2013, according to Gartner, Inc. Among the operating system (OS) market, Android is on pace to surpass one billion users across all devices in 2014. By 2017, over 75 percent of Android's volumes will come from emerging markets.
"The device market continues to evolve, with buyers deciding which combination of devices is required to meet their wants and needs. Mobile phones are a must have and will continue to grow but at a slower pace, with opportunities moving away from the top-end premium devices to mid-end basic products," said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. "Meanwhile users continue to move away from the traditional PC (notebooks and desk-based) as it becomes more of a shared content creation tool, while the greater flexibility of tablets, hybrids and lighter notebooks address users' increasingly different demands.”
Mobile phones are expected to dominate overall device shipments, with 1.9 billion mobile phones shipped in 2014, a five percent increase from 2013 (see Table 1). Ultramobiles, which include tablets, hybrids and clamshells, will take over as the main driver of growth in the devices market from 2014, with a growth rate of 54 percent.
"Complimentary smaller tablets will take over from the larger tablet form factors, providing the added mobility that consumers desire at a lower cost and will compete with hybrids for consumer attention," said Mr. Atwal.

In 2014, the worldwide tablet market is forecast to grow 47 percent with lower average selling prices attracting new users. Consumers continue to buy tablets as an additional device that they carry everywhere. According to a recent consumer study that Gartner conducted in the third quarter of 2013 across Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, the U.K., the U.S. and Japan, over two-thirds of tablets were used outside the home for activities such as vacation or concert. This is a similar pattern to that of smartphones as smaller form factors are driving more portability outside the home.
Worldwide shipments of traditional PCs are forecast to total 278 million units in 2014, a seven percent decline from 2013. Driven by an uptake in Windows ultramobiles, the PC market is estimated to remain flat in 2014 (0.2 percent), after a decline of 9.9 percent in 2013. The Gartner consumer survey showed that less than eight per cent of users would replace their laptop with a tablet, while a transfer to an Ultrabook is almost twice this figure.
In the OS market, Android continues to be the OS of choice across all devices (see Table 2). Gartner estimates that Android will reach 1.1 billion users in 2014, a 26 percent increase from 2013. "There is no doubt that there is a volume versus value equation, with Android users also purchasing lower-cost devices compared to Apple users. Android holds the largest number of installed-base devices, with 1.9 billion in use in 2014, compared with 682 million iOS/Mac OS installed-base devices," said Annette Zimmerman, principal analyst at Gartner.
