Costa Rica: Telefonica and America Movil bid for mobile licences

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Costa Rican telecommunications regulator Sutel has received bids from America Movil and Telefonica in the tender for three mobile phone licences, news agency EFE reports.

The minimum offer was set at USD 70 million, required to build new mobile phone infrastructure. Financial details related to the companies' offers have not been disclosed. Sutel plans to announce the winner and grant the licences in September 2011.

The tender aims to open Costa Rica's mobile market to private competitors. Ending the 47-year-old telecommunications monopoly was one of the conditions to enter the Central American Free Trade Agreement with the US (CAFTA), which took effect in Costa Rica in 2009.
