Acer new Timeline notebooks to hit market in April ?

WorldWideTech&Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Acer's third-generation Timeline Sandy Bridge-based ultra-thin notebooks are expected to hit the market in April, according to industry sources. The new Timeline lineup will be available in display sizes ranging from 13-15 inches with all of them being outsourced to Compal Electronics.

Acer and Compal both declined to comment on market reports.

While Acer has yet to reveal the prices for the new Timeline models, industry sources expect the new Sandy Bridge notebooks to carry a price tag ranging from NT$25,000 to NT$30,000 (US$851-1,021).

With the Timeline orders from Acer, Compal will become the largest ODM notebook contractor for Acer in 2011, handling almost half of Acer's total notebook orders for the year. Acer outsourced the production of the Timeline notebooks to Wistron and Quanta Computer in 2010.

Together with orders from Toshiba and Lenovo, Compal is expected to see its notebook shipments increase 30% sequentially to over four million units in March, compared to below three million units in February and 3.3-3.4 million units in January, according to an estimate of industry sources.
