Samsung's chip sales expected to jump 15.6 pct this year.

Samsung Electronics Co.'This will push up the company's global market share to 10.9 percent from 10.3 percent in 2013, which will easily place it second in the semiconductor hierarchy. Qualcomm's market share is expected to reach 5.5 percent with sales hitting $19.26 billion, with Micron to have a 4.6 percent share and $16.38 billion in sales.

Samsung Electronics Co.'s semiconductor sales are expected to jump 15.6 percent on-year in 2014, closing the gap with industry leader Intel Corp., a global market tracker said Sunday.

According to IHS Technology, Samsung chip sales are expected to reach a little over US$38.27 billion this year, up 15.6 percent from $33.11 billion tallied last year.

This will push up the company's global market share to 10.9 percent from 10.3 percent in 2013, which will easily place it second in the semiconductor hierarchy.

The U.S.-based research institute said Intel's chip sales should also rise 6.3 percent from the year before to $49.96 billion, but its global market share will dip to 14.2 percent from 14.6 percent tallied in 2013.

This translates into a gap of just 3.3 percentage points, down from 4.3 percentage points in 2013 and significantly smaller than 6.9 percentage points  in 2011.

IHS Technologies said Samsung's performance comes as worldwide demand for mobile devices have surged this year, which has fueled demand for mobile DRAMs, NAND flash memory and image sensors, where the South Korean company excels vis-a-vis rivals.

In comparison, Intel holds an edge in microprocessors used in personal computers. Sales of PCs have been on the rise, although outpaced by mobile devices.

After the two leaders, Qualcomm Inc. and Micron Inc. are expected to rank third and fourth, respectively, in term of sales this year, with SK hynix coming in fifth.

Qualcomm's market share is expected to reach 5.5 percent with sales hitting $19.26 billion, with Micron to have a 4.6 percent share and $16.38 billion in sales. SK hynix's market share can hit 4.5 percent as sales hover at $15.73 billion.

The market researcher then said this year worldwide semiconductor sales should reach $352.55 billion, a gain of 9.2 percent from the previous year.

LG Electronics replaces mobile head to tighten grip.

Cho Juno

LG Electronics Inc., South Korea's home appliance and smartphone maker, on Thursday replaced the head of its mobile division with the marketing chief of its parent company in a reshuffle aimed at further pushing the handset business that has recently gained steam after a slowdown.
Cho Juno, director and chief operating officer at LG Corp., the de facto holding company of LG Electronics, will take the helm of the mobile communications department, succeeding Park Jong-seok, the company said.
Park will be handling Cho's job as a new director at the parent company, led by LG Group Chairman Koo Bon-moo.
The latest shakeup is seen by market watchers as a move to solidify the company's global market presence amid heightening competition with Chinese upstarts, including Xiaomi Inc., which grew into the third-largest smartphone vendor in four years.
Despite the cut-throat rivalry between global players, notably in contrast to a big profit slide by Samsung Electronics Co., LG has managed to fare far better than what the market had expected, retaining its third place in the rankings for the last four straight quarters on the back of brisk sales of its marquee G3 models.
Its global market share by revenue stood at 5.4 percent in the third quarter, based on a fresh record high shipment of 16.8 million units of smartphones, according to Strategic Analytics. The mobile communications sector logged a record-setting quarterly operating profit of 384.4 billion won (US$348.9 million) in the July-September period.
Cho is regarded as the right man to shore up LG Electronics' mobile business to another level, market watchers said. The 55-year-old Chicago University graduate spent five years in the early 2000s spearheading LG's North American office, during which the company saw a big jump in market share.
Cho, also known as chairman Koo's right-hand man, is expected to focus on strengthening LG's overseas share through aggressive marketing, using his expertise.
As part of the executive shakeup, LG Group promoted Koo Kwang-mo, the sitting head of LG Corp.'s Synergy Team and the heir-apparent of the group, to executive director in the holding firm as the family-run conglomerate moves a step closer to the handover of management to the fourth generation.
The younger Koo, 36, was adopted by his uncle, LG's chairman, since Koo Bon-moo has no son. The junior Koo holds a 4.84 percent stake in LG Corp. as the fourth-largest shareholder.

Video: The Future as you have never seen it before.

This is an extraordinary SCiFi short film "WANDERES" by Erik Wernquist, narrated by Carl Sagan, from his book The Pale Blue Dot—a book that, if you haven't yet, you must read.

For all its material advantages, the sedentary life has left us edgy, unfulfilled. Even after 400 generations in villages and cities, we haven't forgotten. The open road still softly calls, like a nearly forgotten song of childhood.
We invest far-off places with a certain romance. This appeal, I suspect, has been meticulously crafted by natural selection as an essential element in our survival. Long summers, mild winters, rich harvests, plentiful game—none of them lasts forever. It is beyond our powers to predict the future. Catastrophic events have a way of sneaking up on us, of catching us unaware. Your own life, or your band's, or even your species' might be owed to a restless few—drawn, by a craving they can hardly articulate or understand, to undiscovered lands and new worlds.
Herman Melville, in Moby Dick, spoke for wanderers in all epochs and meridians: "I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas..."
Maybe it's a little early. Maybe the time is not quite yet. But those other worlds— promising untold opportunities—beckon.
Silently, they orbit the Sun, waiting.

Worldwide Tablet Growth Expected to Slow to 7.2% in 2014 Along With First Year of iPad Decline, says IDC

The worldwide tablet market is expected to see a massive deceleration in 2014 with year-over-year growth slowing to 7.2%, down from 52.5% in 2013, according to a new forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC). At the core of this slowdown is the expectation that 2014 will represent the first full year of decline in Apple iPad shipments. Both the iPad and the overall market slowdown do not come as a surprise as device lifecycles for tablets have continued to lengthen, increasingly resembling those of PCs more than smartphones.

"The tablet market continues to be impacted by a few major trends happening in relevant markets," said Ryan Reith, Program Director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers. "In the early stages of the tablet market, device lifecycles were expected to resemble those of smartphones, with replacement occurring every 2-3 years. What has played out instead is that many tablet owners are holding onto their devices for more than 3 years and in some instances more than 4 years. We believe the two major drivers for longer than expected tablet lifecycles are legacy software support for older products, especially within iOS, and the increased use of smartphones for a variety of computing tasks."

Among different form factors and product groups, significant advancements have been made recently by hardware manufacturers to advance the 2-in-1, or detachable, product category. Devices have become thinner, prices have come down, and more models are available. Despite these advances, shipments of 2-in-1 devices are only expected to reach 8.7 million units in 2014, which is just 4% of the total tablet plus 2-in-1 market. A large reason for the relatively small uptake has been consumer hesitancy around the Windows 8 platform, which the majority of 2-in-1 devices are built upon.

"We need to look at how the tablet ecosystem is answering these challenges, and right now we see a lot of pressure on tablet prices and an influx of entry-level products, which ultimately serves Android really well," said Jean Philippe Bouchard, Research Director for Tablets. "But we also see tablet manufacturers trying to offset this price pressure by focusing on larger screens and cellular-enabled tablets. The next six months should be really interesting."

Looking forward, the few unknowns that could impact overall tablet shipments are: the industry reaction to Windows 10; what Google does in this space with Android and Chrome OS; and Apple's rumored product line expansion. Despite all of these unknowns, it seems clear that consumers can be expected to hold onto tablets longer than smartphones.
