Samsung UNPACKED 2014 Episode 2 with Galaxy Note 4 far better than Galaxy S5 in September 3rd, coming up.

 Concept.

"Samsung Note 4 will have far better specifications than the Galaxy S5 smartphone," said Samsung Electro-Mechanics Chief Financial Officer Kwon Young-noh, recently.
Samsung Electro is an affiliate of Samsung and supplies camera modules to Samsung Electronics.
The new Samsung phablet ― a technology term which means a combination of smartphones and tablets ― will come with a 5.7-inch flat OLED screen and metal frame.

Samsung will also bring a curved OLED version of the Note 4 to the exhibition, though the curved Note 4 isn't aimed at appealing to the mass market.

"The Note 4 will be the first smartphone to incorporate an ultraviolet sensor. The sensor can measure UV radiation and offer index levels to Note 4 users inside the 'S Health' application," said an executive at Samsung's software partner based in Korea.

The upcoming phablet will be powered by Qualcomm processor chips and "definitely" support fourth-generation long-term evolution (LTE) mobile wireless technologies. For users in Korea, Samsung plans to put LTE-Advanced technology in the home-turf, according to the executives.

The company made agreements with major wireless carriers in the United States including AT&T, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless for the guaranteed shipments of the Note 4, while it also plans to hold a big promotional campaign in China.

Samsung Electronics will unveil its new phablet ― Galaxy Note 4 in Berlin on Sept. 3, executives at Samsung's top-tier local parts suppliers said.

They said Samsung is apparently looking to rush the Galaxy Note 4 out the door to try and combat Apple's new iPhone ― "iPhone 6" ― which is due out the same month.

"Samsung will hold an event to announce the Note 4 on Sept. 3, just few days before this year's IFA trade fair in Berlin, Germany ― Europe's biggest technology exhibition," said an executive at Samsung's top-tier display supplier by phone.

Samsung plans to send an official invitation letter to interested parties, media and industry officials for the event "soon."

Apple plans to put out a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch variant of the iPhone 6 in September, which may sway a few Note users over to Apple, or vice versa.

In order to keep its existing Galaxy users and attract more customers, the new Samsung device will have enhanced hardware specifications.

NANICO Electric mini-car to take on Sao Paulo traffic nightmare.

Finding a parking spot in Sao Paulo can be a nightmare. But for car designer Caio Strumiello -- that nightmare has been an inspiration. This is Nanico, the smallest car in Brazil. These days parking is a breeze.

NANICO CREATOR, CAIO STRUMIELLO, : "When it comes to parking regular cars are stuck looking for a free parking space while I park my car in between spaces. Inside Sao Paulo you have nothing better because there isn't any space, you cant travel at higher speeds, and yet you have cars that keep getting bigger because people believe that a big car gives you status." Strumiello says what big cars really give their owners is less money and a slower commute. Currently Nanico is gas powered - capable of more than 80 miles per gallon, a fraction of the fuel used in most conventional cars. But Strumiello and his partner Paulo Roberto Da Conceicao are going a step further, changing out Nanico's combustion engine for an electric motor that runs on solar powered batteries.

NANICO TECHNOLOGY PARTNER, PAULO ROBERTO DA CONCEICAO, : "We are installing a motor that will technically have seven kilowatts of potential which is sufficient to travel at a speed of 70 kilometres per hour, which is the speed limit here greater Sao Paulo, and you will be able to charge it in six hours with solar batteries."

The team plan to provide buyers of electric Nanico's with solar panels to charge the cars batteries. Strumiello plans to unveil their creation at a car show in Sao Paulo next month. He says his biggest challenge going forward will be persuading status and comfort conscious consumers to give up on their big cars.

NANICO CREATOR, CAIO STRUMIELLO, : "Now what is important is people make themselves aware that we have to let go of this idea of extreme comfort in favour of society. This is what is difficult. If we can conquer this mentality it will make things better, much better." ...better for the environment and a possible solution to traffic congestion. Strumiello says he is confident that his tiny car is about to make a very big impact on the streets of his city.

Xerox introduces technologies that turn a smartphone into a teacher.

Twenty Xerox scientists specialized in machine vision and image processing, joined colleagues from Google, Facebook, Microsoft Research, Amazon and some of the leading academic institutions in the world to share their research,  in late June.

The purpose of this committee is to make computers behave increasingly like 'human beings', mimicking the way the brain sees and thinks.

The annual conference IEEE Computer Vision / Pattern Recognition, held between 23 and 28 June in Columbus, Ohio (USA), meets annually to leading scientists around the world to work on improving the artificial vision, discipline that allows computers to improve their performance, rise and sometimes even surpassing human capabilities.

"Xerox has extensive knowledge of business processes in many sectors and is a pioneer in teaching computers to extract image analysis and meaningful and actionable videos," said Raja Bala, Scientific Research Center that Xerox in Webster, NY York. "Although there has been significant progress in recent years, scientists still challenges that we have to solve."

Xerox Research presented at the conference this year include:

Detect if drivers use mobile devices when they are driving down the highway

Some state and federal government organizations prohibit cell phone use while driving to improve safety on the roads. Xerox scientists are working on a camera system for motorways employing pattern recognition technology and detects whether a driver is using a mobile phone.

Turn smartphones into personal assistants Driving

Webster researchers are also working on a project of artificial vision that mobile phones become assistants for driving. Using a detection technology facial features, the phone identify the direction of gaze of the driver and detect if distracted or is paying attention to the road.

Call to make images more attention

Xerox researchers in both Europe and Harvard University are studying what attracts the attention of people when they see a picture first. This may develop images that have the greatest effect to predict where people look when viewing a scene, a picture or a game.

Making sense of the information in computer vision: visual signatures

Pictures and video account for 90 percent of current Internet traffic. Therefore it is necessary to have a technology that can automatically analyze an image and create a unique visual signature that distinguishes it from others. The European Research Center Xerox (XRCE) has invented a patented front-line firms make these extremely compact and solid methodology, surpassing current methods of learning, to address the challenging problems of image classification that currently exist.

Designing "golden questions" in complex tasks crowdsourcing Crowdsourcing is commonly used as a forum for individuals found to label images. But it has its challenges when experts are needed for specific issues, as they rarely are available crowdsourcing platforms. To help unskilled annotators, the Xerox Research Centers in Europe and India have designed a system that can make an initial filter to propose a limited number of categories to choose from. The system automatically includes key questions to identify the experts that are selected are reliable and provide some quality work.

Press Release:

Xerox Scientists Share Innovations that Teach Computers to See, Think and Help Humans with their Work

Mobile technology that turns your smartphone into a driving coach and imaging technology that can detect texting drivers among innovations shown at international conference

NORWALK, Conn. —
Twenty leading computer vision and imaging scientists from Xerox (NYSE: XRX) will join their peers from Google, Facebook, Microsoft Research, Amazon and many of the world’s top academic institutions later this month to share their research on making computers more “human like,” mimicking how the brain sees and thinks.

Steadily closing the gap between reality and Hollywood depictions of artificial intelligence, the annual IEEE Computer Vision/Pattern Recognition Conference set for June 23-28 in Columbus, Ohio, draws top scientists worldwide working on ways to advance computer vision, a field that empowers machines to “see” and make sense of the world, augmenting and often exceeding human capabilities.

“Xerox has firsthand knowledge of business processes across many industries, and is a pioneer in teaching computers to extract meaningful and actionable analytics from images and video,” said Raja Bala, a Xerox principal scientist in Webster, N.Y. “Although there’s been significant progress in recent years, a number of scientific challenges remain to be resolved.”

Xerox research presented at this year’s conference includes:

Detecting cell phone use by highway drivers
Motivated by its impact on public safety and property, several state and federal government organizations prohibit cell phone use while driving. Xerox scientists are working on a camera system for highways that uses pattern recognition technology to detect if a driver is using a cell phone.

Turning smartphones into a personal driving coach
Researchers in Webster are also working on a computer vision project that would turn smartphones into driving assistants. Using facial feature detection technology the phone would estimate a driver’s gaze direction, and detect if a driver is distracted and not paying attention to the road.

Making images more eye catching
Researchers from both Xerox in Europe and at Harvard University are studying what attracts people’s attention first when they look at a picture. Understanding that eye-catching element enables visuals to be composed for greater effect and can predict where people will look when facing a scene, a photo or game.

Making sense of big data in computer vision – image signatures
Images and video make up 90 percent of today’s Internet traffic. To explore and use this massive amount of data requires technology that can automatically analyze an image and create a unique ‘visual signature’ that distinguishes it from other images. The Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) has invented a patented state-of-the-artmethodology that creates such signatures in an extremely compact and robust fashion, beating current deep learning methods for such challenging image classification problems as recognizing the brand and model of a car.

Pigeon or dove? Designing ‘gold’ questions in complex crowdsourcing tasks
Crowdsourcing is frequently used as a forum to find individuals to label images but presents challenges when specific subject matter experts are required (such as ornithologists to identify species of birds), since such experts are rarely available on crowdsourcing platforms. To assist non-expert annotators, the Xerox research centers in Europe and India have designed a system that can do a first filter to propose a very limited number of categories to choose from. The system automatically includes ‘gold’ questions to identify untrustworthy annotators and ensure the quality of labeling.

Xerox’s leadership in computer vision
Xerox conducts computer vision research at its centers in New York and France. TheXerox Innovation Group also collaborates with the world’s top academic institutions including the University of Oxford, Harvard University, the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science (INRIA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Mellon, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Penn State University, Notre Dame and University of Maryland.

Is Yahoo entering the heavyweight app league ?

Yahoo’s acquisition of app analytics and advertising company Flurry this week showed just how serious the web firm is about using a coherent mobile strategy to turn its fortunes around.
The company has been busy revamping its mobile offerings and acquiring developer talent and app technology under the stewardship of CEO Marissa Mayer. And this approach is clearly having an effect.
In its second quarter results last week, Yahoo revealed it has 450 million monthly active mobile users, a 36 per cent year-on-year increase, and more than double the figure of two years ago. In addition, the time Yahoo users spend accessing its services via mobile devices has increased 79 per cent year-on-year.
This is impressive progress for a company that was really struggling to convert its previous online prominence into success in the mobile world.
And apps appear to be central to the success of Yahoo’s mobile strategy: it claims to have more than 400 employees developing iOS and Android products, and smartphone users spend 86 per cent of their time interacting with Yahoo within apps.
Recent successes include the Aviate homescreen, which saw rapid user growth in the first week of availability, with those accessing the technology doing so an average of 50 times per day.
The new Yahoo Mail has seen iOS users spending an additional one minute per day using the app compared to its predecessor, with a 65 per cent increase on Android.
Put simply, focusing on apps has been the major driver in the company becoming more relevant in the mobile world.
The Flurry announcement takes Yahoo’s mobile strategy to another level as it is clearly addressing the wider developer community, as well as boosting its in-house expertise.
Flurry’s reach is significant, with 170,000 developers in 150 countries using its analytics tools and a total of 540,000 apps running on the platform.
Yahoo said the agreement to acquire Flurry is “a meaningful step for the company and reinforces Yahoo’s commitment to building and supporting useful, inspiring and beautiful mobile applications and monetisation solutions”.
The proposed acquisition shows that Yahoo wants to work with third party developers by offering analytics services and improved monetisation options through Flurry’s mobile advertising technology.
Yahoo’s mobile advertising play is having success already: its unified mobile search and native buying platform, Gemini, has made a promising start, now accounting for 50 per cent of the company’s mobile display revenue in the US.
The addition of Flurry’s app-focused nous will undoubtedly boost Yahoo’s efforts to become a more important player in the app ecosystem.
Although Yahoo is at an earlier phase, the best comparison is Facebook, which acquired tools company Parse in April last year and agreed to purchase Little Eye Labs, a Bangalore-based start-up that builds performance analysis and monitoring tools for Android app developers in January this year.
Facebook’s efforts recently saw engagement company Fiksu describe it as the most effective channel to promote mobile apps, providing higher conversion rates and better return on investment than other approaches.
Amazon too is becoming a more prominent mobile player with app promotion and monetisation services to attract developers. Of course, the e-commerce giant has the added motivation of stocking its Appstore and a growing device portfolio.
Even Twitter recently got in on the act with the introduction of its mobile app promotion service, through which developers can drive installs and engagement via the microblogging platform.
Out of all the web giants, Google has clearly gone the furthest, developing the world’s most popular mobile operating system and app store, allowing it to have a different and deeper relationship with developers.
Yahoo can’t hope to compete with this (and likely never will), but as a model for how an online search and advertising company can embrace mobile, Google can’t be surpassed.

Germany: BlackBerry Reinforces Mobile Security Leadership with Acquisition of Secusmart.

BlackBerry bolstered its security credentials with the acquisition of Secusmart, a German provider of “high-security voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organisations, enterprises and telecommunications service providers”.
Financial details were not disclosed.
The companies have already worked together, including a partnership to provide Germany’s Federal office for Information Security with a BlackBerry 10 solution “for classified communications for the country’s highest public officials” – including Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The security of Merkel’s communications came into the spotlight late last year, when it was reported that the US government had been monitoring her calls.
While BlackBerry has already trumpeted the security of its own data platform, the deal will enable it to improve its position with regard to voice calls.
BlackBerry has held a strong position in the enterprise world, in no small part due to its security capabilities, for some time, but is coming under increasing pressure from technologies such as Samsung’s fledgling Knox platform.
The acquisition of Secusmart is an indication that despite its well-publicised woes, it is still investing in areas that are strategically important, supporting its renewed focus on the enterprise market.
Industry analyst Jack Gold said: “If BlackBerry can raise the awareness and get the market, particularly in enterprise and regulated industries, to recognise the need for secure voice and the amount of potential loss, then BB could win big in the market. It will take some effort, but this could be a great channel for BB to grow share.”
Hans-Christoph Quelle, CEO of Secusmart, said: “The secrets of our existing and new customers continue to be reliably secure: the heart of the Secusmart technology is and remains the Crypto-Chip integrated into a standard Micro-SD Card. End-to-end encryption is the only method to protect voice and data communication against third party espionage. As in the past no Secusmart employees will have access to encryption algorithm or the secrets of our clients.”
John Chen, executive chairman and CEO of BlackBerry, said: “The acquisition of Secusmart underscores our focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security.”
The transaction is subject to certain conditions, including regulatory approvals.

BlackBerry Reinforces Mobile Security Leadership with Acquisition of Secusmart

Waterloo, ON – BlackBerry Limited (NASDAQ: BBRY; TSX: BB), a world leader in mobile communications, has entered into an agreement to acquire Secusmart GmbH, a leader in high-security voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping solutions for government organizations, enterprises and telecommunications service providers in Germany and internationally.
The transaction is subject to the satisfaction of certain customary conditions, including the receipt of regulatory approvals.
“We are always improving our security solutions to keep up with the growing complexity of enterprise mobility, with devices being used for more critical tasks and to store more critical information, and security attacks becoming more sophisticated,” said John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry. “The acquisition of Secusmart underscores our focus on addressing growing security costs and threats ranging from individual privacy to national security. This acquisition bolsters our security solutions with leading voice and data encryption and anti-eavesdropping technologies, and furthers BlackBerry’s security leadership in end-to-end mobile solutions.”
BlackBerry and Secusmart have previously partnered to offer Secusmart’s innovative technology to customers that have the most demanding security needs. In fact, last year, the SecuSUITE for BlackBerry® 10 solution was selected by Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security for classified communications for the country’s highest public officials. Through this collaboration, the two companies have provided Secusmart-equipped BlackBerry smartphones to a significant number of German government agencies and almost all German government ministries and leaders, including Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“This transaction is a fantastic opportunity to accelerate growth in the market for high-end secure communications solutions, driven by the need to combat electronic eavesdropping and data theft,” said Dr. Hans-Christoph Quelle, Managing Director of Secusmart. “Secusmart and BlackBerry’s solution already meets the highest security requirements of the German federal authorities and NATO for restricted communications. We see significant opportunities to introduce Secusmart’s solutions to more of BlackBerry’s government and enterprise customers around the world.”
BlackBerry’s acquisition of Secusmart is the latest demonstration of the company’s commitment to being the first name in enterprise mobile security. This commitment is why BlackBerry customers include all G7 governments, 16 of the G20 governments, 10 out of 10 of the largest global enterprises in each of the pharmaceutical, legal and automotive industries, and the five largest oil and gas companies. BlackBerry has more security certifications than any other vendor and is the only mobility solution to receive “Full Operational Capability” (FOC) approval to run on U.S. Department of Defense networks.

And with the help of the friendly, animated BeanBird character, webOS also makes the initial setup and connection process quicker and a lot more enjoyable. And by combining Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) 3D technology with extremely high picture resolution, LG’s 4K 3D+ feature offers unobtrusive and compelling 3D viewing pleasure. And thanks to the 4K 3D Upscaler, content in SD, HD and Full HD is converted into crystal-clear, near-Ultra HD resolution.

The LG 105UC9 will be rolled out in other markets from the fourth quarter. Prices and exact dates of availability will be announced locally.
