Computex 2011: The rise of mobile projectors.

Industry leading firms Acer, Asustek, and ViewSonic have been entering the market for micro and mobile projectors to showcase mobile projecting systems with brightness up to 200 lumens.

According to Japan-based Techno System Research, the market size for micro projectors will expand to 70 million units worldwide by 2015. Pacific Media Associates, stated the global annual output value of micro projectors will reach US$1.76 billion by 2014. Liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) micro projector component manufacturer, Syndiant, also predicted the annual shipment of micro projectors to reach beyond 100 million units in four years.

Although the market has not been expanding as fast as expected, many firms are still optimistic about growth. Firms such as Taiwan-based BenQ, Optoma, Aiptek, Vivitek, and South-Korea based Samsung all have been developing micro projector applications.

There are two types of micro projectors: independent projection systems with a single projector and embedded module types for handsets and mobile devices. The former type is bigger in size and can connect to other systems for integrated use. It is predicted for single type micro projectors to grow over 3.1 million units by 2012.

As for the embedded module type projectors, energy consumption, size, brightness, and price all need to be improved and adjusted. Once the adjustments have been made, sales are expected to explode and exceed the sales of single type projectors by 2013.

The brightness of the projectors, life-span of batteries, and high prices have been problems for micro projectors.

Firms such as Acer, Asustek, and ViewSonic have been improving these problems and are showcasing their latest LED micro projectors at Computex 2011. All three firms adopt digital light processing (DLP) technology from Texas Instruments to increase brightness up to 200 lumen. The size of LED micro projectors is slightly larger than other pocket projectors and they need an external connection to a notebook or other device to lower the weight of the built-in battery.

All three firms stated plans to launch products in third-quarter 2011.

COMPUTEX 2011: Ultra-Thin Shuriken-panel notebooks make their debut.

Notebook models with Shuriken ultra-thin panel technology debuted at Computex 2011 with Taiwan-based Compal Electronics and Acer as well as some of Compal's downstream partners such as Anadem showcasing products at their booths.

The Shuriken panel, developed by Korea-based LG Display, allows a notebook with a 14.1-inch panel to have a chassis size comparable to that of a 13.1-inch model.

With Intel also aiming to reduce its future CPU's power consumption significantly from 35% to 15%, models with strong performance, but ultra-thin shapes will become the new trend for designs in the future. LG is already mass producing its Shuriken panels with Acer the first vendor to adopt such technology into its 14.1-inch product line. The notebooks began shipping from Compal earlier in May.

Acer's Shuriken-based TravelMate enterprise notebook has a significantly reduced panel frame from the typical size of 12mm to only 8mm. However, since panels with Shuriken technology have a higher cost than a standard notebook panel, if a standard notebook panel costs US$30, vendors will need to pay 50% extra to implement Shuriken technology.

Commenting on Shuriken, Compal president Ray Chen, at Computex 2011, pointed out that notebook designs will gradually turn to focus on adding value to the product and Compal had spent a long time on R&D related to shrinking the panel frame size. The advantages of the company's R&D will also help Compal to lead its ODM and EMS competitors in the future, Chen noted.

Currently, most ultra-thin notebook vendors such as Apple are trimming down their panel sizes by adopting open-cell assembly, whereby panel makers only complete the cell part of the LCD module and then ship the unfinished module to backlight unit (BLU) makers or downstream assembly service providers to finish the backend part of LCD module assembly.

COMPUTEX 2011:Qualcomm's Snapdragon Family Gains Momentum With Leading OEMs Across Multiple Operating Systems .

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) will be demonstrating the latest Snapdragon®-powered mobile computing devices, including tablets running Android 3.0, at COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2011, May 31June 4.

 Qualcomm's Snapdragon family of smart mobile processors has steadily gained traction across a diverse array of mobile operating systems, including Android, BlackBerry, Chrome, HP webOS, Windows Phone and the next version of Windows. Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile processors currently power 125 announced smartphones and tablets, with another 250 designs in development, more than 40 of which are tablets.
