HP.com to sell a Palm Pre 2 unlocked .GSM?

WorldWideTech. Francisco De Jesús  October 30,2010

According to the Senior Product Manager for the Palm Pre 2, Timothy Pettitt , HP is going to sell directly from HP.com an unlocked (GSM) version to the public in the coming months.

In October 19,2010 HP made a Press release: http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2010/101019a.html

“HP introduces webOS 2.0 the Next Generation of Mobile Innovation.”
And on the Availabilty section wrote:

“Developers will be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of Pre 2 in the United States to use as a canvas to build the next generation of webOS applications and services. More information about the purchase program will be available at http://developer.palm.com/devdevices.html. “

If Timothy Pettitt is not referring to that HP announcement  about unlocked devices for developers and are really coming to the general public , those are great news, for travelers in and out the US.

The date and the price is not revealed yet.  My guess is , it will be around the $400.- That is the price I paid for the Treo 680 GSM unlocked buying it directly from the Palm site back then 2005 in the US and bringing the device to my country Ecuador, South America.

Unless HP wants to get rid of the Palm Pre 2 fast ( was on the pipeline before HP acquisition of Palm ) and the price might be then $249.- perhaps, counting that HP have the pressure to make new announcements at the CES 2011 Jan 6-9.

Maybe the Palm Pad and new Palm webOS 2.0 smartphones with new hardware designs.

Rumors of the names of these possible devices have been around  on the web sometime before, like Palm “Mansion “ , Palm “Broadway” and  Palm “C-40”.

On the video below you can watch what Timothy Pettitt said, about Verizon, SFR France and of the upcoming unlocked Palm Pre 2:

Acer: will announce tablets in New York event. Nov 23, 2010.

Acer: will announce tablets in New York event. Nov 23, 2010.

Acer plans to launch "multiple" tablet devices at an event in New York on Nov. 23, with different OSes and multiple form factors, the company's CEO said Friday.

The market has been waiting for version 3.0 of Google's Android mobile software for use in tablets, said Gianfranco Lanci, president and CEO of Acer, but he did not say whether Acer planned an Android tablet.
He is optimistic about tablet sales and forecast a market of 40 million to 50 million globally next year.

Eventually, he believes, Acer can take a 15 percent to 20 percent share of the tablet market.
With the rise of the tablet, sales of netbooks appear to be slowing down, but Lanci is not worried about the effect on sales of Acer's mini-laptops.

"The idea that the tablet will cannibalize the netbook, we don't see it, except in the U.S.," he said.

Acer also talked up a new app store it plans to launch, one store for all types of devices it sells, from desktops to laptops and smartphones, and multiple operating systems, including Windows, Meego and Android. Acer calls the store the NGS, for New Generation Store. The company plans to reveal more details about the store at the Nov. 23 press conference in New York.

Smartphones: Top 5 worldwide market share 3Q 2010.-Chart

Francisco De Jesús, October 29,2010

According to IDC analysis this is the worldwide smartphones  market share to 3Q 2010. Apple really takes on RIM and goes an step up to the 4th position. Nokia stills number One. The surprise for me is that Samsung and LG with the Android OS are up of Apple and RIM.

Time to make a reflection on the mobile marketing strategy.

Press IDC Release:

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 14.6% in the third quarter of 2010 (3Q10), the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, driven in part by the fast-growing converged mobile device category. According to the International Data Corporation (IDCWorldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 340.5 million units in 3Q10 compared to 297.1 million units in the third quarter of 2009.

The growing popularity of converged mobile devices, or smartphones, with consumers and businesspersons is evidenced by the appearance of a second smartphone-only vendor in the top 5 ranking. Apple moved into the number 4 position worldwide in 3Q10, joining Research In Motion (RIM) as one of the world's largest mobile phone suppliers. RIM has spent three quarters on IDC's leaderboard. Apple and RIM also posted the highest-growth rates among the top 5 vendors last quarter.

"The entrance of Apple to the top 5 vendor ranking underscores the increased importance of smartphones to the overall market. Moreover, the mobile phone makers that are delivering popular smartphone models are among the fastest growing firms," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. "Vendors that aren't developing a strong portfolio of smartphones will be challenged to maintain and grow market share in the future."

Apple, RIM, and the vendors producing Android-based smartphones have put noticeable pressure on Nokia, the overall market leader. "Nokia still leads all vendors by a significant margin for converged mobile devices and mobile phones as a whole," said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Devices Technology and Trends team. "However, Nokia's grip on the traditional mobile phone market has been somewhat loosened, as multiple Chinese vendors have gained ground, especially within emerging markets. To bolster its overall competitiveness, Nokia has been focused on improving its smartphone offerings."

Market Outlook
IDC believes the worldwide mobile phone market will be driven largely by smartphone growth to the end of 2014. "The smartphone is becoming the focal point of the personal communications experience," noted Restivo. "As a result, new market growth will be increasingly generated by smartphones. This year, we are expecting the smartphone sub-market to grow 55% year over year."

Regional Analysis
  • Competitive forces emerged in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) region last quarter to the detriment of market leader Nokia. In emerging markets, brands such as Micromax, Nexian, and i-Mobile chipped away at Nokia's market share. Android-powered smartphones also gained momentum across the region at the expense of Nokia. Samsung gained ground in South Korea while Huawei, Lenovo, and ZTE launched devices in several markets. In Japan, mobile phone market growth was driven primarily by domestic vendors Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu, and NEC.
  • The Western European mobile phone market's growth was largely attributable to smartphones, which grew thanks to the iPhone 4 and Android-powered devices from HTC and Samsung. Demand was also stoked by large operator device subsidies that helped to keep consumer interest in smartphones high. At the same time, the CEMA handset market grew slowly in 3Q10. As a result, smartphone volumes are growing substantially but still only comprise one-fifth of total shipments for the regions combined. This is modest compared to more economically-developed regions.
  • The United States mobile phone market was characterized by growth in the smartphone market. Grabbing headlines were the Apple iPhone 4, RIM's BlackBerry Torch 9800, the HTC EVO 4G, and Motorola's new DROID X and DROID 2, all of which were launched last quarter. Not to be overlooked was Samsung's Galaxy S smartphone lineup, which were launched at all of the major carriers last quarter. Traditional mobile phones, meanwhile, fought back with smartphone-like functionality, but saw their overall share of the market continue to decline. In Canada, Android-powered handsets gained momentum as Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola shipped new models. Huawei and ASUS, low-cost providers of Android devices, entered the market. RIM's BlackBerry Torch was announced while the iPhone 4 was introduced to great fanfare.
  • Despite continued economic sluggishness in some countries, the Latin American region grew as a result of higher smartphone adoption. Vendors like Alcatel, ZTE, and Huawei have targeted Latin America aggressively with entry-level models in an effort to steal share from Nokia, the overall market leader in the region. These models are lower-cost product offerings designed to meet the needs of basic users. Motorola’s Android-powered devices have also grown quickly in the region due to the popularity of models like the QUENCH, Backflip, and Milestone.
Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors
Nokia maintained the top spot in the overall mobile phone market despite year-over-year unit shipment growth of less than 2% in new chief executive Steven Elop's first quarter at the helm. The company grew converged mobile device shipments 61% in 3Q10, but average selling prices for the device type dropped to €136, compared to €190 in the same quarter last year. Nokia attributed the plunge to price pressure from competitors and its stated desire to reach more customers. Nokia hopes the C8 and C7 devices will boost ASPs in future.

Samsung marked a new milestone during the third quarter, pushing through the 70 million unit mark for the first time in the company's history. In addition, the company more than doubled the number of converged mobile device shipments from the previous quarter. Driving this was the worldwide release of its Galaxy S i9000 converged mobile device, as well as its bada-based Wave model. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, Samsung appears poised to bring more smartphones to market, with a new Wave 2 awaiting launch and more mass-market devices for emerging markets.

LG Electronics missed its 3Q10 total mobile phone and smartphone shipment growth targets, resulting in an overall double-digit shipment decrease when compared to the same quarter one year ago. LG has yet to make a significant impact in the smartphone category unlike its competitors. Although operating margin returned to the same levels as a year ago, sales and profitability both fell significantly. By the end of the quarter, LG replaced its CEO Nam Yong with Koo Bon-Joon, head of LG's trading firm, LG International.

Apple leapt ahead of several vendors in 3Q10 including RIM, which it surpassed by 1.7-million units, and Sony Ericsson by 3.7-million units. The company's record shipment performance can be attributed to the introduction of the iPhone 4 in 17 new countries last quarter. The record performance came despite "Antennagate," the name used to describe the controversy around alleged iPhone reception problems, in July.

Research In Motion posted a record number of unit shipments in 3Q10. The BlackBerry maker continues to grow in Latin America, for example, due to the success of the Curve 8520 entry-level model, which has helped drive growth in most emerging markets. The vendor's results were also boosted by the introduction of the higher-cost Torch in the United States, a key market due to the size and intensity of competition.

SonyEricsson, which shipped 10.4 million units in 3Q10, fell off the Top 5 list for the first time since the Tracker was conceived in 2004.

Samsung Nexus (Two) the next  Google phone try to bring unlocked devices to the US.

Gizmodo http://gizmodo.com/5676008/hands-on-the-nexus-two-by-samsung?skyline=true&s=i  is reporting as confirmed the upcoming device and looks it will bring a front face camera as well.

"same 4-inch AMOLED affair from the Galaxy series, is flat, the front is "sort of concave" with hard edges. And the back is curved. The tapering makes it feel thinner than Galaxy S, though it might be about the same thickness. "It feels really similar to the Galaxy S in a lot ways."

The question is what is Google marketing strategy this time to insert unlocked devices to the market and not fail as they did with the Nexus One?

Palm Developer Blog : A Recap of recent Developers Events

A Recap of recent Developers Events
Posted: 27 Oct 2010 04:06 PM PDT
The last couple of months have been a busy time of travel for me, Ben Combee, and the HP Palm Developer Relations team.

Our tour started in mid-September with web 2.0 Expo in New York City.  Our former directors, Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer were on a panel on the future of web browser, while HP Palm had a presence on the vendor floor where Kevin Hague, Lisa Brewster, and I talked about our system and phones, the Mojo JavaScript framework, and the Ares web-based development environment to attendees during breaks.

While everyone was in NY, we were able to take a break from the Expo and head over the Brooklyn Bridge to attend the NY JavaScript Meetup.  Ben & Dion did a version of their “Why the Web Will Win” talk while everyone enjoyed food and drinks at the reBar gastropubIt was a great opportunity to meet with several webOS developers already in the area and expose our ideas and platform to some of the brightest members of New York’s technology crowd.

Our next event was in early October in beautiful Austin, Texas with Game Developer Conference Online. I attended as part of their iPhone/iPad Gaming Summit to be on a panel on Alternative Mobile Platforms I was on stage with representatives from Aurora Feint (who recently launched support for Android), Sony, Microsoft, and Cydia (the app store for jailbroken iOS devices).  I emphasized how many iOS developers have been able to quickly port over applications from Apple’s mobile OS to our system using the PDK’s support for OpenGL ES and I stressed how the Palm App Catalog provides a great way to gain access to a growing user base.

October finished with the first Mobile Apps World conference in London, England.  This was an event gathering application developers with brand managers, media buyers, and corporate executives, and HP Palm was there as a gold sponsor.  I gave a keynote address on the advantages of using HTML and JavaScript to build applications for a wide range of devices, and then followed up with an afternoon of hands-on sessions where I took developers through building an app using PhoneGap for both HP webOS and Google’s Android operating system. Look for a screencast soon with this material.

While in London, I also took the opportunity to visit with some of our London partners, including Quickoffice, who’ve done a great job building a first-class hybrid document viewer app that we’re including in webOS 2.0, and Ideaworks Labs, the creators of the Airplay SDK that allows building cross-platform C/C++ apps for webOS and many other systems.

Our next big event is the HP webOS Developer Day in New York CityIf you can get up to New York on November 19th and 20th, it will be time well spent.  We’re going to be going deep into some of the new features of webOS 2.0 while also featuring many of the cross platform technologies that can make you successful as a mobile developer and expose your apps to a huge audience of users.

A Chinese scientific research center has built the fastest supercomputer

Known as Tianhe-1A, has 1.4 times the horsepower of the current top computer, which is at a national laboratory in Tennessee, as measured by the standard test used to gauge how well the systems handle mathematical calculations, said Jack Dongarra, aUniversity of Tennessee computer scientist who maintains the official supercomputer rankings.
Officials from the Chinese research center, the National University of Defense Technology, are expected to reveal the computer’s performance on Thursday at a conference in Beijing. The center says it is “under the dual supervision of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Education.”
Although the official list of the top 500 fastest machines, which comes out every six months, is not due to be completed by Mr. Dongarra until next week, he said the Chinese computer “blows away the existing No. 1 machine.” He added, “We don’t close the books until Nov. 1, but I would say it is unlikely we will see a system that is faster.”
The race to build the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride.

Adobe : Edge HTML5 animation tool preview video

Edge was demoed during the Adobe MAX 2010 keynote address by Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch and is described by Adobe Fellow Mark Anders in a video on Adobe TV , (see below) as an example of some of the concepts Adobe is looking at bringing into an actual tool sometime in the future. While it is relatively simple to create an animation with HTML5, it can be difficult to choreograph the movement and transformation of various elements of an animation so everything moves where you want it when you want it. It is the choreographing these various elements that Edge focuses on.

The Edge user interface will be familiar to Flash developers with a Stage window displaying the layout of the HTML5 page and a timeline window underneath showing the modifications to various elements over time. To the right of the stage is a Layers panel showing to identify DOM elements. Selecting a layer will display that layer’s properties in the property explorer, which also supports the new CSS transformations in 2D and 3D. The Flash similarities also extend to the use of “Actions” to manage groups of transitions and “Symbols” to group objects.

The Edge prototype uses the Webkit rendering engine to preview animations. Like Dreamweaver, Edge offers a source code editing mode so, like Dreamweaver, when it’s probably a good idea for users to have some knowledge of coding to verify that the generated code is clean.

Cars 2011 : Nissan Juke crossover

Nissan’s all-new 2011 Nissan Juke crossover vehicle is expected to hit show floors in October. The dramatically styled Juke features a 1.6-liter direct injection gasoline (DIG) turbo, 16-valve inline 4-cylinder engine that puts out more than 180 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque.

The Juke’s all-wheel drive offers torque vectoring, which can split torque up to 50:50 between the front and rear wheels, or side-by-side across the rear axle. Canada: Rogers confirmed will launch the Palm Pre 2: Box Images

Last week HP officially announced that the Palm Pre 2 was coming to Canada “in the coming months”, but gave no insight into which carrier was going to carry the device. Then hidden in the source code on the Palm Canada site was “The Palm Pre2 phone is available on the Rodger’s network”. We can now confirm that this new webOS 2.0 device will in fact be coming to Rogers as one of our tipsters sent us the upcoming packaging with Rogers all over it. In addition, taking a look at the pics you’ll see the Pre 2 all hooked up to Rogers network. We’re still waiting on an official launch date and pricing. Check out the pics after the break…

Samsung:T-Mobile USA will offer the Galaxy Tab $399.99

T-Mobile USA today said it will offer the Samsung Galaxy Tab computer on Nov. 10, just a bit before other major U.S. carriers, for $399.99 after rebate and with a two-year service agreement.

T-Mobile's pricing is similar to Sprint's, with a $399.99 price and a two-year contract. Verizon will sell the Galaxy for $599,99 without a contract.
Best Buy is reportedly going to offer a Wi-Fi-only version of the Galaxy Tab for $499.99, starting on an unknown date.
Sprint hasn't advertised it, but it will also offer the Galaxy for $599.99 without a contract and subject to new data plans costing $29.99 a month for 2GB of data and unlimited messaging or $59.99 a month for 5GB and unlimited messaging.
T-Mobile is apparently restricting customers to existing data plans with the Galaxy. A spokesman could not be reached to comment on whether T-Mobile will also sell a Galaxy without a two-year contract at a higher price.
The carriers are all emphasizing the Galaxy's 1 GHz processor speed and brilliant 7-inch touchscreen based on Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) technology. Some reports and even retailers planning to sell the Galaxy have mistakenly said the Galaxy runs with an AMOLED touchscreen, which, instead, is the type of display used in the Galaxy smartphones from Samsung.
The carriers are making some distinctions in the applications running on the Galaxy.
