Palm smartphones coming back to life in 2018, but without WebOS.

TCL the manufacturer of ALCATEL , BLACKBERRY branded devices are going to bring back the Palm Brand  with new smartphones for early 2018. These smartphones will not arrive with WebOS software since LG is the owner of the OS that only uses for Smart TVs.

Instead is more likely the Palm devices will come with Android OS.

There are a lot of Palm mobiles users that still keep their PDAs, Palm Smartphones with Palm OS and Palm WebOS and the TouchPad tablet that probably would like to see a Palm device with the latest technology

Back in the day, Palm pioneered the concept of personal digital assistant (PDA) devices, largely considered the predecessor to smartphones. They’ve entered this market back in 1996 and achieved success with devices like the Palm TX and the Palm Pilot. With the Palm Pre, in 2009, they attempted to take on the rising Android and iOS platforms with their webOS alternative. And while webOS was a compelling platform (which even took rising designer Matias Duarte as their UX head), it failed to actually gain traction in the market. Fast-forward to 2010, and the company was bought by Hewlett-Packard for $1.2 billion, only to be sold again to TCL a mere 5 years later in 2015 (with webOS rights being sold to LG in 2013).

PS. I still have my Palm Treo 680 with me, but use a Samsung  Galaxy S4 at this time.

TCL Communications, the parent company of Alcatel OneTouch, today confirmed to Phone Scoop that it has acquired the Palm brand and plans to revive the failed tech company. 

"We are interested in the brand because we believe the brand has value," said TCL CEO George Guo. "It was once a very strong brand and there are many fans of this brand around the world, including people at TCL." 

TCL intends to resurrect Palm with new hardware, software, and services -- but not on its own. It will ask the community to contribute ideas for potential new devices, operating systems, and apps. It will commit engineers and its manufacturing resources to the project, but hopes much of the R&D will come from the tech community at large. 

TCL said it hasn't worked out the details of how this community-driven revival will function, but it is confident it can restore luster to the brand. "Palm was an original pioneer and we want to keep it that way. 

We want to attract the people who have ideas on how to revive the brand in a meaningful way." Guo shot down the idea of using webOS, which is owned by LG, and ran on the Palm Pre, Pixi, and other phones. 

"We are open to all ideas, but probably not webOS," said Guo. "Palm built by Palm fans is the intent." TCL expects to eventually offer both Alcatel- and Palm-branded products in the US. TCL said it couldn't comment on the terms of the acquisition. It will provide more details as they are developed.

Are Palm phones coming back in 2015 ?

Apparently YES. On the new web site www.mynewpalm.com you can see popping up the announcement of the video above.

The site is registered to a company named Wide Progress Global Limited, which apparently purchased the right to use the Palm brand from Hewlett Packard recently. One of the names attached is Nicholas Zibell, who is also Alcatel OneTouch’s president of operations in America.

Alcatel OneTouch hasn’t made anything official yet, and there’s every chance this could all turn out to be a coincidence. However, the use of the “smart move” tagline, which is also used by Alcatel OneTouch, does make the deal and a forthcoming brand resurrection even more plausible.

Outside of this, there are no clues about what products the Palm name will be used on, or whether webOS will be involved. Alcatel OneTouch concentrates on Android-based smartphones and tablets.

Palm WebOS refuses to die, coming on LG WebOS smartwatches. The return to mobile devices.

Palm WebOS refuses to die, after been sold to HP and then to LG, now is coming on LG WebOS smartwatches. It is the return to mobile devices

In our opinion it might work with all mobile OS devices as possible. Sure LG is testing some WebOS smartphones and maybe tablets to sync and connect with the WebOS smartwatch. Ready for CES 2015 ? Will see.

After all everyone have copied already most of WebOS features and services and can at this time be compatible with some kind of kudos twirks made by developers, now as LG say WebOS  is Web-Centric Platform and always was from the very begining with the Pre smartphones. 

I hope, in that way LG might pick more consumer that were WebOS Pre users that keep the smartphones and Touchpads yet,  and now have other brands but miss WebOS (Palm).

LG have succeed with WebOS on all its line of Smart TVs of every size and technology display from a simple LED to a super 4K Ultra HD even on the curved model.

Notice:
LG have pulled out the site LG Developers WebOS Smartwatch after the news went out around the tech bloggers sites on the web. However on the Google cache of the site here shows a Sept 2, 2014 date and some people are saying LG might pulled it out because there are no WebOS developers on LG anymore and maybe this project is not coming to see the day light. That is a rumor.So take it with a grain of salt.

Will Apple feel the heat of not moving to a bigger iPhone display in early times?

Apple have been reluctant to move on the phatablet screen sizes when the new market segment* started with Samsung Galaxy  Note a combination of smartphone and stylus tablet.

So at this time we are making some questions?

Is there massive, pent-up demand for big-display iPhones that will suddenly revive Apple’s unit growth? Or did Apple miss the window of opportunity by not jumping into the big-display market two years ago? Has the pricing of Android phablets declined so steeply that an expensive iPhone with a modern display size no longer holds the appeal it would have had in 2012 or even 2013?

Apple’s error in moving to the phablet segment may simply be a temporary blunder that is easily corrected later this year — or it may be a huge mistake that is too late to fix now that Android devices with 5- or 6-inch screens are deeply entrenched and starting to drift below $300 price point?

Consumers’ preference for jumbo screens and cheap models has only grown more intense since 2012.

There is zero global unit growth in the category that the current iPhone range occupies. None. This explains why Apple is likely now finally moving to bigger display sizes on the iPhone 6.

There are reports that suggest Apple's suppliers will start mass producing new, larger 4.7-inch screens for the next iPhone as early as May. The screen could go up to 5.5 inches later on.

We will see how the consumer will react to a iPhone 6 phatablet or just with a 4.7 to a 5.5 inch display smartphone for this 2014 Christmas holidays.

( By the other way some consumers feel the iPhone has not change much since the iPhone 4S)

*The segment was really started by Palm in the smartphones very early years but in small screen sizes at that time. Palm and HP failed, the first with keeping the Treos with not moving from the touch age to the multitouch age on the right time failing with the Pre multitouch smartphones that had a not convincent hardware and the second to improve what Palm left and continue to launch devices with cheap plastic cover cases like the HP TouchPad, taking them to a fire sale and finishing making webOS an Open Source software now licensed and owned part by LG and part by Qualcomm.

LG have introduced webOS TVs at this time in USA at CES2014, KOREA, ASIA , Russia, for all EUROPE in Italy at LG INNOFEST 2014, Turkey and now in Canada.

I hope Latin America comes right after.

The most exciting demonstration for me personally was the webOS SmartTV and LG has done a remarkable job of saving what was once the most promising alternative mobile OS and turning it into the most intuitive SmartTV operating system available.

Smooth, uncluttered and focused on the end user's webOS discards the tired tablet-like icon barrage approach we've seen from SmartTVs and instead offers a more intuitive and fluid experience.

LG Canada's Dealer Show reveals focus on 4K, webOS HDTVs and wearables.

LG Canada showcased its recent products, many of which haven't been seen outside of CES 2014. The focus this year was more affordable 4K HDTV's, the newly-acquired webOS SmartTV operating system, IPS panels of LED HDTVs and various lifestyle and wearable products.

Credit LG for creatively reinventing the way we watch TV. One of their OLED models was designed to be wall-mounted and even resembles a picture with a frame. The frame cleverly conceals a powerful speaker and the display itself doubles as a great slideshow presentation screen.

The crown jewel of LG's 2014 TV lineup was their 77" OLED 4K HDTV that was also curved. Simply one of the most stunning HDTVs we've seen and even skeptics of the whole curved display movement will acquiesce that curving does make sense for a model of this size.

The most exciting demonstration for me personally was the webOS SmartTV and LG has done a remarkable job of saving what was once the most promising alternative mobile OS and turning it into the most intuitive SmartTV operating system available.

Smooth, uncluttered and focused on the end user's webOS discards the tired tablet-like icon barrage approach we've seen from SmartTVs and instead offers a more intuitive and fluid experience. 

Mobile devices including the new LG G Flex, the LG G2 as well their new LifeBand Touch health wearable and accompanying headphones that measure heart rate. We also saw some of the new soundbars and soundplates that offer space saving surround sound for HDTVs.

All-in-all, LG Canada seems to have covered all the hot areas of consumer technology for 2014 and is bringing true innovation into the marketplace with new experiences, improved product lines and possibly game changing technologies.

LG bought the rights to webOS from HP in February of last year, it didn't acquire patents in the deal. HP clarified then that the associated Palm and WebOS patents will be licensed to LG. So Qualcomm is now the owner of those patents, although on the Press Release below don`t mention Palm OS or Palm webOS ,just say Qualcomm Incorporated has acquired a patent portfolio from Hewlett-Packard Company, Hewlett-Packard Development Co LP and Palm Inc, and that the portfolio, comprising approximately 1,400 granted patents and pending patent applications from the US and approximately 1,000 granted patents and pending patent applications from other countries, covers technologies that include fundamental mobile operating system techniques.

The question is will Qualcomm enter the smarphones and tablet market as

Remember Jon Rubistein is in the Qualcomm board of directors. Are they thinking in a re-launch of webOS entering the smartphones,tablets and now phatablets market?

Is Jon mad about HP did wasting good time and wants to make things right this time?

Qualcomm is the worlds number one on mobile chipsets manufacturing. Maybe they will create a new company to built mobile devices.

The Korean company will show off its latest TVs and even a rumored fitness band.

Some of the Smart TVs will be (Palm) webOS powered. Not saying at this time if they will live streaming.

 It was the next step in the evolution of webOS 3.x, and a gambit to move webOS smartphones into the same space of consideration as Android and iPhone.

But in the end, it was none of those things. The Windsor (Not) never stood a chance of making outside the doors of the webOS campus in Sunnyvale. Too many factors conspired to keep this device out of the hands of customers new and old. 

The Windsor (Not) isn't just the webOS slate smartphone that never was. It's the webOS slate smartphone that was never meant to be.

Who doesn’t love money? If you’re one of the many who have apps in the App Catalog and love money, you’re in luck! In order to perform some maintenance on the App Catalog we’re going to need to pay developer’s outstanding balances. This one time process will send out payments to developers who would otherwise not have been paid yet. Normally, the App Catalog sends out payments once the total owed is over $100 or 100 €. For this payment, all outstanding balances will be paid, regardless of amount. Consider it an early Thanksgiving gift.

Also note that the payments will be coming from the e-mail addresses webos.us@hp.com and webos.eu@hp.com. Be sure to update your mail rules so the notices don’t get lost.

Hoy HP por intermedio de su compañía filial Gram  en su portal webosopenproject, anunciò la disponibilidad del sistema operativo webOS antes de Palm, como abierto y gratis para fabricantes de móviles, tales como teléfonos inteligentes , tablets y PCs.

Para tal efecto HP en un video hace una demostraciòn de como webOS Open puede ser portado fácilmente a una PC, en este caso una HP Touchsmart.

webOS sigue siendo único y de fácil desempeño. Es considerado el mejor frente a otros que  emulan especialmente su multitareas sin llegar a ser exactamente igual, asì como la simpleza y eficiencia de su UI.
