Samsung filled a new design patent for its foldable smartphone

Samsung has filled a new patent for an entire new design (pictures above) for its foldable smartphone rumored as Galaxy X ( Project valley).

The design is for a very large phone with a hinge in the middle that helps to fold the phone. There are other designs Samsung has presented to patent before with a different hinge system. (picture below)

At this time we don`t know for what of the designs Samsung will select and when the company is thinking to present the final product.

Take note these patents request don`t mean that these are actually a final product. Sometimes are just ideas that don`t see the light.

Samsung is No. 1 as holder of LTE-related patents.

South Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has emerged as the top holder of standard-essential patents related to long-term evolution and LTE-Advanced technologies.

  

Citing data compiled by the Taiwan-based Intellectual Property Office, Samsung said it took up 17 percent of the world's standard essential LTE-related patents, outpacing major global rivals.

  

Standard-essential patents refer to major technologies that are vital in producing standardized products.

  

"Samsung's possession of essential LTE and LTE-A patents reflect the company's effort to develop technologies in the mobile industry," Samsung said in its official blog. "We have established strong grounds in the fourth-generation mobile market."

  

LG Electronics Inc., Samsung's smaller South Korean rival, and U.S. Qualcomm Inc. followed by garnering 14 percent each, trailed by Ericsson, Nokia and NTT DoCoMo Inc., which all clinched 5 percent.

  

China-based Huawei Technologies Co., one of Samsung's major rivals in the Chinese market, held 3 percent. Pantech Co., a cash-strapped South Korean handset maker that faces liquidation, took up 1 percent.

HP has approached potential buyers about the mobile portfolio of patents, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. 

The intellectual property includes those related to WebOS, the smartphone and tablet-computer operating system that Hewlett-Packard bought through its 2010 acquisition of Palm Inc., which it later wrote down.

Hewlett-Packard has removed some restrictive conditions that made the patents unattractive to buyers, said two people who have reviewed the portfolio. That made the patents more appealing to prospective buyers, and more likely to fetch a higher price, these people said.

Whitman initially turned WebOS, designed for smartphones and tablets,that Whitman’s predecessor, Leo Apotheker,shuttered before her, into an open-source software project and rebranded it as a wholly-owned subsidiary called Gram. She sold the operating system’s code to LG Electronics Inc.  earlier this year.

Hewlett-Packard retained WebOS’s patents under that deal and licensed them to LG. The agreement would be unlikely to encumber Hewlett-Packard’s ability to sell its WebOS patents, one of the people with knowledge of the sales process said.

SEOUL, Korea, and PALO ALTO, Calif. -- LG Electronics Inc. has acquired the webOS operating system technology from HP, the companies announced today.

To support its next-generation Smart TV technology, LG has entered into a definitive agreement with HP to acquire the source code, associated documentation, engineering talent and related websites associated with webOS. As part of the transaction, LG also will receive licenses under HP’s intellectual property (IP) for use with its webOS products, including patents acquired from Palm covering fundamental operating system and user interface technologies now in broad use across the industry.

Today’s announcement paves the way for continued innovation on the webOS platform and on LG’s roadmap of innovative solutions for many years to come, while allowing HP to focus its resources on strategic business opportunities such as cloud computing.

“This groundbreaking development demonstrates LG’s commitment to investing in talent and research in Silicon Valley, one of the world’s innovation hotbeds. It creates a new path for LG to offer an intuitive user experience and Internet services across a range of consumer electronics devices,” said Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer, LG Electronics Inc. “The open and transparent webOS technology offers a compelling user experience that, when combined with our own technology, will pave the way for future innovations using the latest Web technologies.”

Ahn explained that LG Electronics’ investment in webOS technology and its acquisition of the innovation team’s R&D capabilities are expected to extend LG’s leadership in bringing Internet services directly to consumer electronics devices. “Integrated with LG, this team will be the heart and soul of the new LG Silicon Valley Lab, focused on bringing innovative technology solutions to market through the most popular platforms for sharing and consuming content and experiences,” he said. With the transaction, LG will add the Sunnyvale and San Francisco sites to its global R&D locations, in addition to its existing U.S. sites in San Jose and Chicago.

Also under the agreement:

• LG will assume stewardship of the open source projects of Open WebOS and Enyo.
• HP will retain ownership of all of Palm’s cloud computing assets, including source code, talent, infrastructure and contracts.
• HP will continue to support Palm users.

“WebOS and its associated community deliver market leading platforms for the next generation of connected devices. HP and LG do not expect this transaction to have a material impact on either company’s financial statements. Terms were not disclosed.

Netherlands: Dutch court ruled Samsung does not infringe Apple patent.

A Dutch court in Amsterdam has ruled Samsung Electronics does not infringe an Apple Inc patent by using certain multi-touch techniques on some of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers.

Apple argued in September in the Hague court that Samsung infringed its patent on multi-touch function, which lets users use two fingers at one time on a touch screen.

"With these products Samsung does not infringe the claims that Apple has made," the court said in its ruling on Wednesday.

Apple lost a preliminary injunction on this patent in the Dutch courts last year and also lost its battle in the courts in Britain against HTC Corp, and in Germany against Samsung and Motorola Mobility, which is owned by Google.

The Dutch court acknowledged that its multi-touch patent ruling was similar to those in Britain and Germany.

Samsung said it welcomed the Dutch court's decision, while Apple declined to comment on the ruling.

The Hague has become an important court room battle ground between companies making mobile phones and tablet computers, as court actions there are considered to be cheap, speedy and efficient.

The Dutch court's ruling comes ahead of a decision in the United States from the International Trade Commission on Thursday over claims that Samsung infringed on Apple patents.

Apple offered to sign a cross-licensing deal over patents, Samsung said it is unacceptable.

Apple has proposed a cross-licensing contract to Samsung Electronics, an official said Thursday.

``Apple offered to sign a cross-licensing deal over patents; but its requests were unacceptable,’’ the senior Samsung official said.

Apple’s intellectual-property licensing director Boris Teskler, had outlined a deal to his counterpart at Samsung _ Kim Seong-woo _ in a three-page letter that was revealed this week after U.S. Judge Lucy H. Koh rejected the firms’ request to keep the documents sealed.

``Apple is willing to license its declared-essential patents to Samsung on license terms that rely on the price of baseband chips on a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) royalties basis. Apple estimates that this approach, which implements the true meaning of and requirements imposed by FRAND, will result in a $0.33 per unit in royalties for Apple patents,’’ Apple said in a letter to Judge Koh. 

``I don’t doubt that Apple would have liked Samsung to accept its offer and Apple’s proposed per-unit amount may seem low,’’ Florian Mueller, a German-based patent expert, wrote on his popular FossPatents blog.

``By submitting the classified letters to Judge Koh, Apple was intending to appeal to the presiding judge that its attempts to sign a peace treaty with Samsung vaporized due to Samsung’s unwillingness to accept the offer,’’ said another Samsung official.

Amid the deepening legal feud, the Korean firm has been raising its brand awareness in the global market. According to a study by InterBrand, a major consultancy in branding, Samsung’s brand value was estimated at $32.9 billion, ranking it ninth in terms of corporate awareness worldwide.

``For Samsung has nothing to lose in its fight with Apple,’’ a source said. Last year, Samsung’s brand awareness was 17th.

``Samsung’s anti-Apple campaign is so far paying off. It is now the world’s biggest smartphone manufacturer and is rolling out more software- and hardware-improved devices as the fight is a good excuse to further encourage designers and technicians,’’ said the source.

Meanwhile, Samsung has officially asked that the ruling in August against it that awarded Apple $1.05 billion be thrown out as jury foreman Velvin Hogan failed to disclose his previous ``legal problems’’ with a company that Samsung has a close partnership with.

According to Samsung, the controversial foreman didn’t tell Judge Koh that he had filed bankruptcy in 1993 and had been sued by his former employer, Seagate Technology.

At this time Apple wants Samsung against the wall, at least in the USA, and went this last Friday with all the caballeria (cavalry) asking the US Court in California to ban the most recent Samsung mobile devices Galaxy S III, Verizon Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Note 10.1. Apple thinks they own all the features you can do with the multitouch way to perform any mobile in anyway. But there are a lot of Palm Inc patents now owned by HP including webOS patents, that Samsung and all OEM`s should check them out. Just go Google here make a search Palm Inc patents and you will see all the way thousands of them. Besides, I think HP should make all the efforts to asure all OEM`s manufacturers worldwide that webOS opensource is others patents proof in order to avoid future lawsuits at all and before launching webOS Opensource 1.0 in September. One of the Palm Inc patents (link below ) I like is related to unfolding mobiles and you Samsung have the flexible displays ready to be incorporated in new mobiles. RealNetworks, Inc. patents sale agreement with Intel, is done.

RealNetworks, Inc. announced today that it has completed the sale of patents and its next generation video codec software  to Intel Corporation for $120 million.

RealNetworks will retain certain rights to continue using its patents in both current and future products & services. In addition, Intel has signed a memorandum to collaborate on future support and development of next-generation media software and products.

RealNetworks does not expect the sale to have any detrimental effect on its future trading. Approximately 190 patents and 170 patent applications, as well as next generation video codec software have been sold.
