Sharp Corp. said today Monday, its Galapagos tablet computers will hit store shelves Dec. 10.
Sharp will release two tablet computer models that will mainly serve as e-book readers. One model, a 10.8-inch screen device that will allow users to read magazine spreads, will carry a price tag of 54,800 yen. An easy-to-carry 5.5-inch model will be priced at 39,800 yen.
The two tablets will have touch-screen color LCDs and feature wireless LAN functions, giving users access to e-bookstores and social networking sites.
Along with the tablets, Sharp will offer an initial 20,000 books and periodical titles, including The Nikkei. Periodicals will be downloaded to the devices automatically.
Galapagos has an 8-gigabyte memory card with a storage capacity equivalent to a year's worth of newspapers, or up to 10,000 e-book titles.
