On Friday April 18, 2014 , the U.S. space agency (NASA ) released an image that may well have been taken from a science fiction movie . This is a photograph showing the red moon with a beam of green light that seems to emerge from its surface.

This frame has not been retouched, or recreated with special effects. Both the moon, with that particular scarlet and green beam of light were captured early on April 15 , according to a publication of the ABC website . Thus , this picture was taken during the total lunar eclipse , the first of a tetrad - happened that day . NASA scientists explain the hue acquired earth satellite that night because the " eclipsed moon reflects the dimmed red light all the sunsets and sunrises all , which is filtered by the limits of the planet."

Moreover, the mysterious green light beam is a laser that was fired from the 3.5-meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory , located in southern New Mexico . This device is used by a team from the University of California San Diego with pinpoint accuracy to measure the exact distance between the Earth and Moon.

This procedure is possible because the beam is directed to a retroreflector that Apollo 15 left the moon in 1971 . Then stated in an article in La Vanguardia in Spain. The laser shot also allows researchers to test the theory of gravity is Einstein 's theory of general relativity and is visible when the Earth's atmosphere scatters part of the intense light emitted .
