Barnes & Noble Sends Out Invites for Nov. 7 Event. A New Nook color ?

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Barnes & Noble on Monday sent out invitations for a November 7 event that will likely include the introduction of a revamped Nook device.

"Please join us for a very special announcement," the invite reads, below an image of the Nook logo.

The event will take place in New York next Monday, and will kick off at 10am.

Last month, The Digital Reader said that B&N was prepping a $349 tablet, which would possibly be known as the Acclaim. The Nook Smart Touch e-reader would still be offered at $139 while the Nook Color would remain at $249. Specs were not provided.

The event comes about after a  week ,before Amazon is set to debut its $199 Kindle Fire tablet on November 15. Pre-orders for that device started on September 28, and Amazon said recently that it has ramped up production on the Fire due to demand.

1Q2011: Nook Color eReader takes the lead. Tablets shipments fell 28%.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

1Q2011: Nook Color eReader takes the lead. Tablets shipments fell 28%.

Media Tablet Sales Lag Optimistic First Quarter Targets, But Forecast Remains Strong, According to IDC

Worldwide media tablet shipments into sales channels fell by 28% on a sequential basis in the first calendar quarter of 2011 (1Q11) to 7.2 million units worldwide, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker.

Looking forward, however, IDC raised its shipment forecast for 2011 to 53.5 million units from a previous projection of 50.4 million units.

For 1Q11, the seasonal trends typically found in more mature consumer electronics and computing categories had a notable impact on the burgeoning media tablet market, suggesting that demand for the category may not be quite as strong as recent media hype suggests.

The eReader market (which IDC counts separately) experienced similar seasonality, undergoing a sequential decline in shipments to 3.3 million units as the post-holiday season proved to be challenging for that category.

However, eReaders enjoyed 105% year-over-year growth as the devices continue to grow in overall popularity, particularly with the introduction of color devices, such as Barnes & Noble's Color Nook. (Note: Media tablets have been shipping less than a full year and year over year growth comparisons are not yet available.)

Apple's iPad and the recently introduced iPad 2 continue to dominate the media tablet market, as other vendors have had a more difficult time finding market acceptance for their products. But even Apple's shipments for the quarter were well below expectations.

Some supply-chain hiccups on screens as well as the pre-release announcement of the iPad 2 several weeks before its actual availability combined to have a noticeable impact on the company's shipments for the quarter.

Mobile phone vendors, such as Samsung and Motorola, who have focused their distribution through the telco carriers, found moderate success with their media tablets, but sales were largely stymied by many consumers' unwillingness to sign up for the 3G/4G data plans that the carriers typically require along with these devices. As an operating system, Android-based devices grew to 34% of the total, a share increase of 8.2 points over the previous quarter.

For eBooks, Barnes & Noble's Color Nook helped the company to take the lead in the eReader market for the first time. Amazon's Kindle was second, but the lack of a color offering has clearly impacted the company's previous dominance in the eReader market. IDC forecasts the worldwide eReader market to ship 16.2 million units in 2011, a 24% increase over 2010.

"Like the PC market, Media Tablets had a bit of a challenging quarter in Q1, as concerns about general macroeconomic issues and the post-holiday letdown took a toll on demand," said Bob O'Donnell, IDC Vice President, Clients and Displays. "We expect the rest of the year to be much stronger, but we believe vendors who continue to focus on the telco channel for distribution will face serious challenges."

"Although media tablet sales were not as high as expected in 1Q11 due to slower consumer demand, overall economic conditions, and supply-chain constraints, we believe with the entrance of competitive new devices in second half of 2011, the market will sell close to 53 million units for the year and continue to grow long-term," said Jennifer Song, IDC Research Analyst.

Barnes & Noble doubles apps on Nook color tablet.

WorldWide Tech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

US book retailer Barnes & Noble has announced it has doubled the number of apps on its Android-based Nook Color e-reader tablet, as well as beefing up its electronic books and magazine offerings. New apps include Fandango, Evernote and Seesmic, along with games including Aces Hearts – a Nook Color exclusive – and Astraware Tradewinds 2. There are also “a number of highly requested bible-centric apps,” and several new apps for children.

The top five paid apps for the device are Angry Birds, Astraware Mahjong, Quickoffice Pro, Drawing Pad and Aces Jewel Hunt. The leading free apps are Fliq Calendar, Fliq Notes, Pulse News, Nook Word of the Day and Fliq Tasks. Approximately half of Nook Apps cost US$2.99 or less, while the vast majority are priced at US$5.99 or less, the firm said.

Barnes & Noble issued a software update for the Nook Color in May that activated its apps store, and – in the company’s words – transformed the device into “a full-featured Android tablet.”

“Since we added our customers’ most-requested tablet features just a few weeks ago, we’ve had an amazing response,” said Jamie Iannone, President of Digital Products at Barnes & Noble.

Meanwhile, new magazine titles added to the Nook Newsstand, include Discover, Automobile, Billboard, Astronomy, Birds & Blooms, and The Hollywood Reporter.

All periodicals are available for subscription with a 14-day free trial or via single copies. In addition to Nook Color, most Nook Newsstand titles – including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and USA Today - are also available to Android tablet users via the free 'Nook for Android' e-reader app.

Trends: The e-reading consumer habit is about to change or still ?

WorldWideTech & science.  Francisco De Jesús.

According to Amazon the Kindle 3 e- reader device has succeed on sales this holidays.

I was guessing then, what is the way the consumer likes to read ebooks, now when there are a bunch of tablets pc offering e-book stores apps almost on  every brand, and upcoming much more for 2011.

If the consumer likes to focus on reading only, with no distractions on emails notifications, videos, social networking, phone calls , surfing the web etc., that a  smartphone and tablets have, why then to upgrade a e-reading device to a tablet pc, like Barnes and Noble are doing with their Nook Color ? Nook Color upgrade   It is the only e-reader  supplier that is upgrading to tablet, until now.

Maybe just blocking the way to the tablets with e-books sales options, or not having such a success as the Kindle 3 does ?

To early to tell if Amazon is upgrading some time to a tablet pc as well.

What do you think ?

Nook Color e-book reader to upgrade to tablet PC.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Barnes & Noble will upgrade its Nook Color e-book readers to support Android 2.2 OS in January 2011, allowing the book retailer to venture into the tablet PC market.

Barnes & Noble outsources the production of the Nook Color e-book readers to Inventec,Taiwan.

Barnes & Noble's latest Nook Color adopts TPK Touch Solution's touch interface, and has clearly shown the vendor's intention to enter the tablet PC market. Barnes & Noble's action will not only affect Amazon's Kindle, but also bring some competition to PC vendors due to its strong library of content.

Barnes & Noble updating its e-book reader to a tablet PC will make Inventec the leading manufacturer of tablet PCs.
